Thats some good rotation there. Shear must of been quite good. Doesnt look supercellular though.

Re: General June Weather
Great to see it reported as a "full on" tornado, not a sub-optimally small type. No room for reporter-minimisation in that quote!

Re: General June Weather
Multivortex tornado there. Did the Auckland radar pick up a couplet? Would have been short lived and the radar takes 6 minutes to do a scan I think.

Re: General June Weather
Some nice footage.
July 2011 there was a tornado near Waipu Cove just up the road from Mangawhai Heads, probably a similar weather pattern.

Thunder! Locally the wind is swinging from east to north east, a sweet spot is appearing in the gulf to my NE.

Re: General June Weather
Lovely day here on the West Coast north of Greymouth. Staying in Reefton. Mild day at Westport and the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks.
Sadly, the Tasman Sea was rather calm so the blow-holes didn't do much at high tide.
Tornado, you would be pleased with the thunderstorms up your area today, plus the bonus of a tornado somewhere up there.
Apparently, there has just been clagg in the Canterbury area since we left so we are glad to be over here.

Re: General June Weather
torrential rain here last night
another 50mm, 188 for the month now
over 3mm per minute was my maximum peak intensity , where we had 12mm in 27 minutes
very big drops...very loud on the roof!

Re: General June Weather
I got 17mm here overnight. Thunder heard 11.30pm.
The 12Z Whenuapai sounding shows a strongly curved hodograph with 0-3km helicty at -211. So that trough line certainly had the shear for tornadoes.

Re: General June Weather
Just missed a heavy line last night but managed another 12mm. The low's centre moved about 100km north west overnight in the Tasman. Some decent moisture plumes currently appearing on the water vapour image near the boundaries of the incoming surface troughs for today. Some more good radar watching coming up.

Re: General June Weather
Current temp 15C and dp14C, showers. Hopefully some warming today will add the zest for a thunderstorm.
