Re: General July Weather
Been some very unusual weather in the last few days, rain washing away frost a few day ago and now we have a fog that's hung around for over 24hours, quite rare for here.

The maximum temperature at Wanaka in the last 5 days has been 3.3C due to valley cloud, the ski fields above it in sunshine

14C by 9am with a very blue sky and little wind here. Does not feel like July at all. I see looking in Clifo that Ruakura hit 21.8 on July 24, 1989. Wonder what weather pattern caused that.NZstorm wrote:Had a mild day here with 18C at Auckland airport and 19C at Ardmore. Hamilton also 18C. Westport 17C.
Alexandra max temp was -2C, Twizel -1C and Wanaka 2C with lifted fog.
Edit: Sorry, that was August, the columns were out of alignment.

Re: General July Weather
2 cents worth.
Large scale equatorial easterly developing by this Thursday across the Pacific. One important ingredient for significant North Island rain and maybe floods. Models medium term outlooks will become volatile in the next few days with any mid latitude long wave trough that arrives in the Tasman towards the end of July, early August.

Re: General July Weather
Feels like the worst winter in a long time, but it's its also the first winter that I haven't been able escape overseas for a break from it.
Nice to see the sun this afternoon, our sun hours must be very low for July.

You only needed to nip over the the West Coast mate, its been magnificent and superior to much of what you'll see overseas scenery wise.03Stormchaser wrote: ↑Sun 19/07/2020 15:50 Feels like the worst winter in a long time, but it's its also the first winter that I haven't been able escape overseas for a break from it.

Yes. It was like that when we stayed there and made our base in Reefton, last month.
Good weather there whereas there was clagg over the Hill on the East coast of the SI.
Were the blowholes at Punakaiki operating? Even though we were there at high tide, the Tasman Sea was rather settled, so not much action..

Re: General July Weather
I have been dreaming of being on the coast in this weather, didn’t get the opportunity to head over this time but I’ll do it at some point. That said, it was a very pleasant day today under the norwester and a cracking sunset.

Re: General July Weather
Cloud clearing away overnight with a rather white frost this morning.
High cloud increasing from the west from mid-morning to develop a fine developed NW Arch.
North to NW winds developing with it becoming rather mild as compared to the last week or so with today's maximum petering out at 14C.
Still rather mild this evening with northerly wind and 13.3 @ 10pm.

Re: General July Weather
We have 13C dewpoints this morning which is certainly indicative of July thunder. Will be keeping on eye on the front crossing today.
Some lightning out in the mid Tasman indicating the colder air which comes in later tonight.

Re: General July Weather
yes hopefully a thunderstorm for us today, tonight, tommorow morning. todays sun should help with the heating a little.
there might be thunderstorms on the front right now but blitz is not picking up lightning. props ic/cc
Well no storms today looks like it. just some brief rain i hope tommorow produces. or i declare a thunder drought for auckland.
intresting ms says "rain then showers. some heavy with thunderstorms. should say possible.

No blowholes this time- the Tasman Sea was a millpond, any wind was all offshore from the SENZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Mon 20/07/2020 18:28Yes. It was like that when we stayed there and made our base in Reefton, last month.

Re: General July Weather
Just a quick 3.2mm here on the first rain band. This a lively 24 hours ahead. As well as the cold uppers, some models showing a 120 km/h south westerlies @850 hPa mid tomorrow morning through Auckland. Get ready for power outages if that verifies and mixes down to the surface.

Re: General July Weather
10-day GFS suggesting we may end up with a dry July here, with not a lot of precip until the end of the month. Currently on 69mm MTD.

Re: General July Weather
Dams are averaging 58%. Perhaps we will have hose restrictions for the rest of the year.
Grey Lynn not dry though with 7mm today and 95mm for month so far.

Coldest air mass of the winter has commenced passing over Macquarie Island. -2c around sea level this afternoon. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDT60801 ... 4998.shtml
Even colder air to follow in the next 48 hours. Sea level snow around Invercargill on Thursday a reasonable chance with some moisture around.
