Re: General July Weather
Reports of fairly widespread hail showers around ChCh and surrounds. certainly looks like a decent convergence going on to the north and west of the city

Re: General July Weather
I thought it looked quite unstable out there today and knew if we had been in spring/summer we would be getting storms today. Iv just heard a clap of thunder actually. Cell looks small out over my hometown.
Quite typical when im working 45 minutes north near manderville...

Re: General July Weather
Some pictures from today.
First one looking towards Mt. Peel.
The lower one looking north from Orari about 2pm.
Apparently, there was one lightning flash recorded from this cloud. Other lightning strikes were from a cloud band just north of Christchurch in the Pegasus Bay area. Talking to Bob Crowder this evening, he heard no thunder but said he recorded a light , sort of wintry hail shower later this afternoon.

Re: General July Weather
For anyone interested in the weather models performance in the Southern Hemisphere over the last month, here are the decay curves. The 'chaos theory' is still kicking in at around 192 hours out. Not one model is above 70% accuracy at 500 hPa past 192 hours and all of the current main global models are 55 to 45% accuracy at 240 hours.

Re: General July Weather
A generally fine day but with 'coldies' moving north delivering isolating lightning strikes in unstable cloud forms north of here over the Plains.
Today's maximum was 11.2C.
Interesting that MS didn't mention about coldies in this SW flow where there was obvious cold cells did exist in this flow from the SW?

Re: General July Weather
lucky you south islanders getting action. showers again here today. high pressure rolls in for the next week or so. bad for auckland. good for northland clean ups.
intresting that niwa says the high wont slide away next week. i hope it does. we need more rain and thunder. when will auckland get a decent thunderstorm for once. im sick of just the one clap all the time.

Re: General July Weather
Still hail drifts in the garden at home aswel this morning.
The hail got to about 10mm pea size. Not bad for a small unexpected wintry storm.
The upper air yesterday was very cold aloft, must of been just enough heating in the sun along with a slight convergence in the afternoon.

Re: General July Weather
Not much action down here, today.
After a white frost it was a fine sunny day with some thin high cloud moving to the NE from the SW flow over the country.
Today's maximum was 10.4C.

Re: General July Weather
Another lovely fine day after a frosty start.
Today's maximum was 15.7C.
What a lovely settled July it is, especially after the shortest day when the wintry weather usually deteriorates to wet weather and low level snow.
Nothing much coming our way for the rest of the month.
If it is a settled winter, would spring/summer be rather unsettled, but then, also, it could be rather settled?.
This depending on how accurate of models in predicting forthcoming weather patterns/scenarios in the months ahead.

Re: General July Weather
Tony is predicting some colder weather around mid August but apart from that there’s nothing else on the horizon - it’s been a very boring, gloomy winter! At least here on the plains there’s been nothing of interest to date though as we know we can still be getting half a foot of snow to sea level right up to mid September so plenty of time left yet...NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sat 25/07/2020 22:40 Another lovely fine day after a frosty start.

Re: General July Weather
I would love to be able to say we could dare i say it have a good thunderstorm outbreak this spring/summer. The patterns look like there could be alot of south to southwest windflow this season which could be good for cold troughs moving through.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sat 25/07/2020 22:40 Another lovely fine day after a frosty start.

I know we wish for this every year but when you see data like that it does make you wonder if this season could be one like back in 2012/13

a weak la nina should mean less SSW outbreaks than "normal"
but does not mean there wont be any at all

Re: General July Weather
White frosty conditions, this morning, gave way to another fine and sunny day, with today's maximum reaching 11.8C.
Rather settled conditions for July with milder conditions look likely to set in for the rest of the week.
