Goodness, it's still raining there. Daybreak is going to bring some scary sights.

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
That Glenbervie site recorded 199mm in 6hours yesterday evening. Could that be a NZ 6 hour rainfall record? Perhaps not as the South Island West Coast can get that type of rainfall.
The Northland Regional Council rainguage in Whangarei recorded 90mm in 2 hours in yesterday evenings thunderstorm.

"Civil Defence welfare centres have been activated for people forced to leave homes in the Far North, as thunderstorms battered Northland and a tornado reportedly lurked offshore."
OMG the media are so bad
is that tornado still lurking this morning? (asking for a friend)

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
This beast hasn't quite finished yet with a parade of surface troughs with pluming mid level moisture above them. Cloud top near -60c off Whangarei at the moment.
The low is moving NE in the Tasman so should drag the system north and weaken which will produce another showery easterly flow into the Upper NI before its done in the next 24 hours.

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
Reminds me of a Northland flooding event in March 2007. There was a slow moving line of training heavy showers/ thunderstorms in the Kerikeri area. 417mm fell in the hills near KeriKeri. Whangarei got 225mm from that event and Auckland city 82mm.
Shame the Auckland area missed out on the heavy rain with this event

I know the media are always bad at things. at least they eased of the mini tornado thing a bit now. although they still use that from time to time. that waterspout might of dissipitated before it hit land. despite looking tornadic.

I notice that Newshub is not very good at reporting or highlighting weather events.

more than me i only have 17mmCyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Thu 16/07/2020 10:19 Wind has moved from east to more ENE again here. Looks like the low in the Tasman wiggled slightly west in the last 2 hours causing the knock on effect.
Another 6mm with showers off the gulf brings the running total to 27mm

Yes, Northland can get significant rainfalls. Can't think of the place. One place there has a record of the highest rainfall in one hour. The late RW could fill us on this.

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
Remember thunderstorms are isolated so there are potentially still many areas in northland still suffering from drought.

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
at times the rain was widespread
so all of Northland has had good rain
but yeah the heaviest downpours were in lines

Re: Tasman low NI 15 -19 July
The low has given the top end of Northland a backhander on the way out today with some fairly robust storms on that last trough.
Locally, 34mm for the thread. A fascinating synoptic scale Tasman gyre that completely fooled models and forecasters in real time over 48 hours on the 16 & 17th. Unfortunately, infrastructure damage will be extensive.
