With a La Nina we likely won't get a very dry summer like the last two.tornado wrote: Mon 31/08/2020 13:01 is a big dry forming. concerning all the high pressure forming around the north? a front tommorow. but wont be much to help our forever lasting drought![]()
Convection will be more possible as well as possible lows from the north.

I hear you Richard. Was out watering the lawn and the garden yesterday. The ground is rock hard! Hoping for 15mm or so tomorrow, anything less with the very mild weather quickly kicking back into gear by the end of the week is a rather worrying moving forward.

Hopefully the La Niña happens. Was a poor thunder season this year for winter. As predicted. But we should get some this summer though

Re: General September Weather
We very much need this to be the case... Went into winter with a 250mm yearly rain deficit and have ended the season with a 300mm yearly deficit.NZstorm wrote: Mon 31/08/2020 15:36 With a La Nina we likely won't get a very dry summer like the last two.

I see niwa is predicting normal to above normal rainfall for spring, here's hoping.

Snow is settling in Ashburton. Lower than forecast. Radar shows a deep convection hint there

Re: General September Weather
well a low risk of thunder here tomorrow. moderate risk in the west. a low risk for thunder tonight. as the front comes in. see what happens. we might get more rain just a tad than forecast.Awhituobs wrote: Tue 01/09/2020 11:25 nice to see some action weather for canterbury (changeable spring weather/snow)

Re: General September Weather
easterly wind change here already
barometer rising and the temperature dropping
its a wet high in the tasman though with a upper level NW flow making for tradewind windflow type showers still
looks to be a new low forming NW of Taranaki, but it probably will roll over up and onto northland

Re: General September Weather
The all-time lowest September minimum for Christchurch of -4.4C may be under real threat come tomorrow morning - all the ingredients are there with a cold air mass, clear skies and light winds all in the mix...

Christchurch Gardens, which is generally a little warmer than the airport, recorded -4.8C on this day in 1919.Bradley wrote: Wed 02/09/2020 07:33 The all-time lowest September minimum for Christchurch of -4.4C may be under real threat come tomorrow morning - all the ingredients are there with a cold air mass, clear skies and light winds all in the mix...

Re: General September Weather
Thanks for that Nev - one would have to wonder what the airport would have recorded!! the -7.1C recorded at the gardens on 19/07/45 you would think would easily translate into a -8.5C for the airport!Nev wrote: Wed 02/09/2020 08:29Christchurch Gardens, which is generally a little warmer than the airport, recorded -4.8C on this day in 1919.Bradley wrote: Wed 02/09/2020 07:33 The all-time lowest September minimum for Christchurch of -4.4C may be under real threat come tomorrow morning - all the ingredients are there with a cold air mass, clear skies and light winds all in the mix...

Re: General September Weather
A fine day today after yesterday's short wintry event.
Today's maximum was 12.5c.
Here's a photo of Mt. Peel which I took today.

Re: General September Weather
Just looked at the GFS model run for sunday afternoon. Looks like an upper trough to cross over Canterbury sunday evening with a chance of heavy showers/ hail and maybe even a storm. Could be one to watch for.

Re: General September Weather
Gosh the English Oaks are in a hurry this year. They usually do come out in September, but it's only the 3rd.
