Storm risks 6th Sep

Unread post by Richard »

yay, First moderate risk for Canterbury for the season, and luckily its fallen on a Sunday too-

From the MetService
A front moves northeast over the South Island today bringing a southerly change and a period of frequent showers, especially in the east. The front is expected to move onto the south of the North Island this evening.

This morning there is a low risk of thunderstorms in much of Fiordland and the far south of Westland. There is a low risk of thunderstorms in Westland this afternoon.

This afternoon there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Canterbury. These storms may be accompanied by bursts of heavy rain and hail. There is a low risk of thunderstorms in a slightly larger area surrounding Canterbury as indicated on the chart.

This evening there is a low risk of thunderstorms in Wairarapa.

I wondered about that last night and saw a low risk, guess it depends on heating but the numbers otherwise look ok for upper temperatures and no strong norwest. Might deal to my gardening plans though!

Seeds sown before a thunder storm do so well, that's if you get a good rain with it. Gardening is what I'll be doing today along with a fair bit of eyes to the SW

I saw there might of been a small chance of storms today in the week but has since backed away alot. Alot of capping and cloud cover.
Not so sure there will be lightning but maybe some isolated small hail later?

Cloud cover is going to clear away this afternoon, so should be some heating at least.

I dont understand where the risk is. And they've gone quite bullish with moderate too. Just a dull typical high cloud day with the odd spot of light rain so far

Edit suns out now. We'll see...

I think it looks promising with that cloud now developing from BP westward

Sunny out there and some mid level cumulus around, so there’s something possibly there when the front arrives. Airport has a light easterly blowing too.

Radar is down though, so it’s window and sky-watching for developments.

Nice and warm here with a light NE.
Dark to the south/SW.
I see the radar is not working properly again.

Nothing much from here although there is some cloud around, weak cumulus, but nothing much to wet in your pants over

Just scanned the horizon: sky to north looks dark/overcast, and there are some possibly interesting cloud-forms beginning to appear to the west.
Temp has fallen from 17°C to 13°C in the past two hours.
Light southerly breeze.

Some good peels of thunder here in Belfast, seen a few bolts come down not much in the past 10 minutes but it's about to chuck it down by the looks.
Very high based I noticed especially in the last hour.
Edit, big one right overhead crap 😂😂

Few rumbles heard from rolleston to. Messy looking but dark. Only really just fired up in last hour, radars are down so cant see much unfortunately. Good start to spring but will it keep it up this year...?

Sky to the west has filled in with streaks and layers and rolls of clouds now, and I should judge there may be something thundery to the north-west.
Temp. 11.9°C; moderate southeasterly breeze.
