Strong Cold Front - 17/18 Sept

Looks like a wintry night on the way.
Metservice have just issued a heavy snow watch. Snow down to 300m in Canterbury, north of Castle Hill, heavy above 500m. Also above 400m in Central Otago, heavy above 500m.

Could be some decent snow accumulations for some, before sunrise tomorrow.

Obviously we are currently experiencing the heavy orographic rainfall and associated prefrontal northwest gales.

this front may bring us north islanders some rain as well but only 10-15mm sadly as drought grows again

Not a whisper of storm risk for Canterbury in the end, probably timing pls the strong NW and dew point is a little low, but should be a pretty interesting front.

Yep, agreed, no storm risk at all... timing not quite right.
Front looks interesting for sure.

I wouldn't be so quick to write off storm potential today. Lightning active storms over the alps look to be pushing further east towards South Canty currently.

Timing always looked an issue for today and just didnt look like a set up in my opinion. Late last week/ weekend looked ok for today but changed since monday.

Good rain band developing and will work its way into Canterbury tonight. Seems like metservice surface maps are more on to it then the GFS.. GFS had it coming in later around midnight but its already getting going now.

Still the case? Radar picking up plenty of decent rain in your hood. I have mates going up Mt Peel tomorrow, I have suggested they will be walking in snow from the carpark

Yes. It came onto rain from 8pm, with some steady falls since then. Temperature dropped away as well. The southerly wind did pick up for a while but has eased back now.

Porters Pass just closed due to snow and heavy snow is falling with 5cm currently settled above 450m on the plains also.

I see Culverden had a moderate shallow earthquake early this morning too. Wind, fires, snow, quakes. Quite a day for the elements

Very intense edge on that band. Up to 152mm/hr briefly, highest rain rate on my station for over a year.
