Re: General October Weather

A lovely day here today with nice sunny weather this morning and a brief, or should I say 'short' thunderstorm this afternoon. :-$
No southerly this morning but a moderate to fresh NE wind blowing for much of the day even after the thunderstorm passed over, never giving into the southerly which seemed to be the prominent feature north of here, judging from the reports I received on the forum and also from Bob Crowder.
I counted 12 rumbles of thunder and saw 3 forks and one long snake form of horizontal lightning, which sort of finished the thunderstorm activity by running out of energy?
Low cloud moving in from later this afternoon with it coming onto rain, but easing from about 9pm.
16.5mm in all for today.

Thre southerly was short lived here too, ended up being quite calm most of the day while it rained, 9.8mm for the day.

Yes had the odd drop of ice on the window on the way to work. Pretty low key stuff though, no need for windscreen wipers

Dreadful day for Oct here, wondering if record lowest Oct max is under threat. High for the current 24hr reset period may have been set at 9:01am this morning.

The upper trough is working its magic. Pressure steady on 1017 hPa locally and the temperature continues to drop with moisture. Now down to 10.9c here.

2 cents worth. There is an expansive area of brutally cold polar air trapped around the Antarctic continent at the moment and it's having a profound affect on the Southern hemisphere's temperature anomaly. When the final stratospheric polar vortex warming occurs within the next month, this air is going to be displaced equatorward and eventually encounter the La Nina moist pacific easterlies as the Hadley cell moves south. Recipe is highly volatile.

Just looked up October 2009 in cliflo for the day I remembered heavy snow Mt Te Aroha and Pirongia. High was 8.4C on 6th October 2009, so that beats today.

Coolish day here with some fresh snow along the foothills from yesterday's cold air movement that delivered the brief storm along that area, yesterday afternoon..
Today's maximum was 12.7C after a frosty start. Wind back to a rather cold NE this afternoon.

Yes, reports of 15 cm of snow on the road up Mt Te Aroha earlier that morning. However, I think you mean the day before on Oct 5th, 2009 for Hamilton Aero and Ruakura's lowest ever Oct Tmaxs of 8.4C and 8.2C respectively, even though those highs were recorded just before 9am the following morning. Note that the calendar-day Tmaxs for those sites on the 5th only got up to 7.9C and 7.3C respectively. Numerous other North Island low Oct Tmax records also fell that day, including for Auckland.

Hamilton Aero's post 9am Tmax for yesterday looks to be either its 2nd-equal or 3rd lowest Oct Tmax on record, assuming it doesn't get warmer before 9am this morning.
