Re: General October Weather
It has been a good first 3 days of October. Looks like some polar troughing in the mix over NZ this coming week and next. By polar troughing I refer to little precipitation making troughs rather then any particular weather type.

Did the half that wasn't from yesterday at Hagley this morning, so when it rose from 20c to 27C halfway through that was tough! Wonder if I've offended the weather . Stunning day in Chch, 25C at the airport and 24 in Addington, that cooler change seems to be coming through.

Re: General October Weather
Dull day eventuating from when that southerly went through, with overcast conditions.
I blame that high to the NE of us, being up to 1035 hPa
Back to a NE breeze this afternoon. Nice for a walk through Talbot Forest, though, listening to the Tui's and Bellbirds.
Shame about those houses lost in the fire at Lake Ohau.

Re: General October Weather
That wind change came so close but ran out of puff as it come up against the NW which has been very strong around the middle of the day, pleasant enough temps today with a top of 20deg.

What's this, on the media, about thunderstorms and flooding today in Southland?
Nothing on the lightning strikes on Blitz?

Re: General October Weather
The thunderstorms were late last night even though Southland wasn't even under a 'low risk' on the MS thunderstorm outlook. The rain caused some problems as the ground was saturated from the melted snow from earlier in the week.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 04/10/2020 21:14 What's this, on the media, about thunderstorms and flooding today in Southland?

Re: General October Weather
A dull day eventuated after being warm and NW overnight and this morning, with the boring Sc moving in.
Some wind gusts prior to the boring southerly change.
Today's maximum was 25C before the dry southerly moved from late morning, then remained around the 15C figure, for the rest of the day.
Cleared up this evening.

Re: General October Weather
Sorry to hear this, it can be a sight to behold when a norwest storm roars out of the Hooker, was super windy when we were there a month back too I know Adrian Bailey a bit, nice guy and event organizers have had little to no luck this year. I also had a few mates running Aoraki this year. Hopefully things are better Sunday week for the crater Rim ultra which I'm in.Chris W wrote: ↑Sat 03/10/2020 19:05 Violent winds and sideways rain all through last night at Aoraki Mt Cook. My tent was destroyed, we bailed into the shelter which was incredibly noisy in the wind costing us most of the night's sleep, and the half marathon was called off this morning for the first time in 11 years because they couldn't keep the road signage upright and it was going to be brutal running back up the road. Great trip!

Nothing unusual here. Lowish cloud cleared by 10am to a stunning clear sky and visibility. My sensor on 20.4 already.jamie wrote:Pea soup fog arrived on a light southerly wind this morning. Real weird.

Re: General October Weather
Depending which way you were going, Brian.
We did it many years ago and went from Clyde to Middlemarch in strong NW winds which were behind us which made cycling along it, 'a breeze' excuse the pun.
We did notice people cycling the other way were making hard work of it cycling into the wind.

Re: General October Weather
Today it was a calm day with high cloud and a NW Arch.
The forecast said Gale NW in exposed areas, so if today's maximum gust was 4k/hr from the north, we must be in an un-exposed area. ?
Today's maximum was 21.1C.
