MetService has Timaru at -3.8C ? would be a destructive frost if that was the case.

Beats Timaru Aero's previous lowest Oct temp of -3.6C in 1966 since records began there in 1962...

Very cold this morning here in Geraldine when I went out to get the paper.
Thank goodness we had frost cloths over our tender plants and fruit trees.

Appears Timaru Aero got down to -4.5C this morning, so its old Oct record of -3.6C well and truly smashed...

General October Weather

Unread post by jamie »

Had our first sea breeze of the summer season here today I believe. I may be wrong but I think it’s the first day I’ve seen the DP jump during the afternoon on a wind increase and direction change. Nearly got to 18 today.

I expect another pretty lackluster event here in Chch, perhaps a bit of light rain overnight or for election day morning?

Probably like Wednesday when it was supposed to rain in the morning but then it is was fine and we had that thunderstorm in the afternoon?
Good frost this morning here for October but a fine day apart from increasing NW cloud. Light variable winds with a maximum temperature of 18.3C.

GFS has moist air lingering around the upper North Island this week, some showers at times but a warmer feel.

The nights will be quite warm this week after the recent run of cool nights, plenty of growth in the garden this week.

Temperature currently 17.9°C and dropping away as a southerly/SE change brings low fluffy grey cloud across.

Another very warm day here to dry out the pastures even further. Gusty northwest this afternoon and up to 26 degrees. Currently 24 degrees. Really need decent rain here soon. Browning of lawns now evident.

Jet streams tonight are currently crossing the equator over the central Pacific. Seems like a propagating equatorial Rossby wave is the culprit. The atmosphere is sounding an early cyclone season warning around the South Pacific.

Violent thunderstorms plagued the South Canterbury region today as forecast by MetService.
No just kidding, actually it was a dull boring overcast claggy day with light winds from between SE and the south, but if it cleared, there may of been a different story.
Owing to the overcast conditions, no thunder related activity happened but we had some drizzle early this morning and later this afternoon.
The Rakaia radar did record a substantial rain area moving from the west to the east area over North Otago/Waimate area this afternoon.
Today's maximum was 16.3C recorded late morning.

Some subtle upper level troughing combined with dewpoints in the mid teens could lead to some convection Wednesday to Friday but the models don't agree on any particular day. GFS does suggest Friday.
