If only we could have a year that "dry" down here! Half that if we are lucky but then thats the norm in terms of averages between us

Re: General November Weather
It is more about the deviation from normal and the local impacts of this.

Re: General November Weather
Observed some odd, raggedy clouds to the south, otherwise mostly high overcast. Wind at present WSW; 26°C.
My unscientific opinion only: almost feels like we may have thunder later.

Re: General November Weather
Yes my point was meant to be despite last weeks rain we are highly unlikely to reach much more than half of the average rainfall at our place for this year
311mm Year To Date in Halswell
Over at Jeffs in Hoon Hay (5km from us) he's got a pretty stark graphic on where we are at in terms of the last 5 years

Re: General November Weather
Thank goodness for the rain a week or so ago as it would be pretty dire right now without it. That 40mm was very timely. I see now though if Christchurch hits 24 tomorrow (likely to be 26 or higher) then Metservice pointing out it will be a heatwave with 5 days in a row at 5 degrees or higher compared to the average.

Re: General November Weather
EC is hinting of another polar injected upper low cutting off in the Tasman, setting up a cyclonic barometric col next week over the NI. My November rainfall record will be smashed if it verifies.

GFS on board too, could be another nice top up for parched areas like usCyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Tue 17/11/2020 09:02 EC is hinting of another polar injected upper low cutting off in the Tasman, setting up a cyclonic barometric col next week over the NI. Re: General November Weather
Metservice tipped over the 24c required just now and Jeffs @ Hoon hay is over 26c. Heatwave it is then..Cantab03 wrote: ↑Mon 16/11/2020 21:14 Thank goodness for the rain a week or so ago as it would be pretty dire right now without it. That 40mm was very timely. Re: General November Weather
Was it early October? Metservice records from 16-31st October only shows highs around 23c.
I guess 25-27c are more "heatwave" type temps rather than 23c hah. Regardless even Christchurch's temps although slightly warmer than normal don't feel out of place for this time of the year.

Re: General November Weather
Depends on what you mean by 'official'.
Did it meet the WMO's definition of 5 consecutive days with Tmaxs 5.0C or more above its normal Oct Tmax of 18.0? Yes.
Did it get a mention by MS or NIWA? No.

Re: General November Weather
Sort of a heat wave in Geraldine over the last 5 days but temperatures here are not official.
Today's maximum here was close to the 30C mark.

^ To top it off, MS says in its video this morning re Chch that 'we will have qualified for our first heat-wave of the summer'?
Our second heat-wave of spring maybe?

Re: General November Weather
I can remember years ago it was traditional for the Canterbury Show WE to be hot with North-westerlies.
I can remember Morris dancing in Oamaru in the 1990's in thirty degree temperatures.
Meanwhile it was a hot day today here in Geraldine and you could really feel the heat. Today's maximum was 29.4C.
Light winds mostly from the northerly direction but then there was the odd weak SE sea-breeze coming through.
Interesting NW cloud forms this afternoon with a nice red sunset.

Soggy in Kaikoura this morning, though looks like it might ease through the day.

Re: General November Weather
Southerly change wasn't much through early this morning. now back to a stiff easterly and slightly muggy conditions.
A good shower around 10 am, produced 2.5mm of rain.

OFF TOPIC A BIT BUT : i see metservice made mentioned of last years christchurch tornado. its been one year ago. now. and two years ago a tornado hit near ashburghton but metservice has not mentioned that even tho the 2018 ashburghton tornado was bigger. although it didnt do much damage. i thought they would have mentioned the tornado event. i wonder if they will mention the hail event on friday?

Re: General November Weather
Rains getting quite heavy here now.
What is interesting is how all the showers around Canterbury are drifting in different directions. One heavy one south of Timaru
