We have had about 30 minutes of sustained heavy rain, peaking at 110mm/hr, mostly 60mm/hr in Swanson. Wouldnt be surprised if there was some flash flooding out there tonight!

I see the airport is reporting gusts near 80km/h from the NE. Strange, much closer to the coast here and it's only a little gusty at times, 40-50km/h

Only about 5mm just north of tauranga . Ihr of windy drizzle/no thunder.Usefull rain for the Northerners though. Metservice has a shallow low centered near Cambridge for 3 days. Very unusual , models will change of course. Converging winds and thunderstorms there and surrounding areas south of the SW flow. Getting cold aloft as well !!!

Looks a good prediction. The cold upper trough won't be fully onto the North Island until tomorrow. Chance of lots of lightning and small hail in the Auckland region tomorrow. 20mm here last night.

Just 4.5mm here overnight.

I see Whenuapai had 29mm overnight (incl. 28mm in 2 hrs), so 79mm since Thursday, compared to Auckland Aero's 19mm overnight, or 49mm since Thursday.

Whangaparaoa's intermittent hourly readings (been like that for over 5 days now?) show gusts to at least 96 km/h last night.

MS's moderate risk favouring more central areas of the North Island this evening…
MetService Thunderstorm Outlook

Issued at 9:03am Sunday 8 Nov 2020
Valid to Midnight Sunday 8 Nov 2020

A frontal rain-band will move from the north Tasman Sea onto the northern and central North Island this afternoon and evening.

Initially there is a low risk of embedded thunderstorms associated with this rain-band as it moves southeast over Northland and Auckland during the afternoon, but this risk is likely to increase to moderate from evening as the rain-band moves into the area from Waikato and Taranaki to Bay of Plenty and Taupo, including the Bay of Plenty. Any thunderstorms that occur will be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities mostly of 10 to 25 mm/h and hail. However about inland Bay of Plenty, Taupo and eastern areas of Waikato and Waitomo this evening, there is a low risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS producing downpours with intensities of 25 to 35 mm/h.

Additionally there is also a low risk of a few thunderstorms about Golden Bay this afternoon.

No other thunderstorms or significant convection expected over New Zealand during this period.

Nice drop of rain in Canterbury and yes, MS sounding the T-storm alarm bells with that forecast.

Dual fed polar injected upper trough now starting to cut off over the Tasman, new surface low starting to spin. Cold pool will be around -25c @500 hPa with sea temps around 18 to 19c around the upper NI tomorrow. GFS has TTs in the upper 50's, waterspout peak hour if it verifies.

Tasman is starting to bubble NW of Northland and Auckland.
