Seems to be a heavier wave of showers coming off the Alps, but so far not much has made it here. Looks like South Canty is getting wet though. Not sure the coldest upper air is that far north yet.
There wont be anything other then a rain band now.
It was never really a great set up. Had the SW change come in at 4pm with the upper air dynamics the way they are now then there would of been a greater chance.
Timing a real factor today.

I agree. Steady rain here since noon with the occasional substantial fall.
Wind, now back to a more SE to east direction here and 8/8 Nb overcast.

Seems like us north Islanders have stolen your thunder lol
Dunno about that.
Rain easing off now and it should clear up but then at about a quarter to ten this evening, as I am climbing into the shower, there could a boom of thunder like what happened last Saturday night but then

It is the Canterbury/Otago(east of the alps) thunder season now, December being the best month. Inland North Island thunder season as well.
Yes dec normally our fruitful severe month. We have had some good storms in Jan though and supercells in February. Im not really getting a great vibe for our season this year being a strong la nina.
We really want neutral or el nino for the best hail storms in Canterbury

Its heavy rain in chc. If there had been some sunshine this would have delivered for sure. D'oh.
What part of chch? Just a light shower here. 0.2mm for the day so far
Avonhead. They're brief showers too but heavy with big droplets and its loud on the roof!
Welp, time is running out for our once yearly thunderstorm...
Easing away now as it is moving north. One clap had a dump at the end.
At least there was a thunderstorm with this system as forecasted by the forecasters, but it did really have no significance to the weather here today.
Maybe it will liven up again as it moves north or just fade away? Still rather cloudy down here looks as though it will clear overnight.

PWS's showed we got 14-15mm round us in Rolleston, so a decent drop with several very heavy periods from 8:30-10pm.
So quite a bit more than Halswell, and Lincoln had 6.6mm according to MS so a bit of variation around the traps.

That 6.6mm reading from MS (+0.4mm this morn) is actually for Chch Aero, as MS has no data for Lincoln (same for Christchurch Central, Hilltop and Marshland).
Thanks Nev. Thats worse than useless.
Reminds of when I lived in Reefton, the MS readings on the Reefton page are actually from Springs Junction which is ~50km away and has vastly different weather.
