Re: General December Weather
At least you guys heard the sound of thunder, nothing down here, although the skies did look dramatic, especially inland and around TC.
Sad to hear about the hail storm damage in the Nelson region, though.

Re: General December Weather
Yes was awesome seeing build ups. Auckland was in low risk but we still had thunder hail too. I heard about the hail and tornado upper south island.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 27/12/2020 20:35 At least you guys heard the sound of thunder, nothing down here, although the skies did look dramatic, especially inland and around TC.

Re: General December Weather
Sunny morning for a wee while but clouded up again during the day especially inland with moderate to fresh SE winds.
Today's temps were around the 14C to 15C mark but it did peak out at 17.6C when the sun came out this afternoon.
Cloudy evening with winds dying away.
Got down to 3C overnight and now it was 8C at 10pm.

Re: General December Weather
I drove down to the Bombay Hills yesterday at 5pm, rain and lightning observed just south of the Bombay Hills with the Cbs. Some weak activity over Auckland in the evening.
A fresh start here, 9C, dp 8C. A fresh southwest breeze here today means the Ak east coast beaches will be best.

Chilly this morning in Lyttelton, but at a relatively mild 7.7C on Metservice as opposed to some of those inland temperatures.

Re: General December Weather
Matamata got a heavy downpour about 5:30pm yesterday as I was passing through, good for the farms in the area. Over in the BOP today and even here a bit cool when the sun goes behind a cloud.

Re: General December Weather
I was in Hokitika and Boxing Day was interesting. It was that unstable over the mountains. Towers went up all along the range front as far as you could see in both directions. One developed close enough to hear a few bits of thunder. They were stationary. No sooner had they matured, they cut themselves off from fuel but a new tower would go up next to it anyway. They were still boiling up enough to make showers well into the evening. It was pretty cool. I didn't take a photo cos lazy.

Re: General December Weather
this cold out break and lots of southerly and SW winds is not your typical la nina pattern
that does look to change slowly going into next year

Re: General December Weather
You are probably right there, Brian.
Ice on the truck's windscreen and also on my wife's car left outside, just after sunrise, not very La Nina ish.
From 0.5C, it climbed up to 19C for today with a moderate to fresh NE wind here this afternoon.
No damage to any plants, although I did notice the neighbour's outside tomato plants did have wilted looking leaves on it.

Re: General December Weather
I'm liking what the models are showing for Friday-Saturday and Sunday, a broad area of low pressure over central NZ along with strong mid summer heating its going to be interesting for inland areas.

Re: General December Weather
Feeling like early November, beach was very quiet this evening despite a fine day. More like an El Nino pattern. I noticed the islands in the gulf have browned off, starting to look droughty

Re: General December Weather
We have had a SW flow over Auckland since Xmas day, mostly sunny but cool breezy, the last day of SW flow today.
