A Thunderstormic Christmas?

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Could there be a few thunderstorms leading up to Christmas Day, this week and there after?
Interesting as to what the models and forecasts are saying, especially down here.
Could be like January 1017 when we got those heat thunderstorms drifting east from off the Mt. Peel area, which was under a La Nina era.
No lightning observed but you could hear the distant sound of thunder way up there in the cloud.

For the North Island we keep an eye on the 27th at this stage, Waikato south.

Judging by today's effort, it doesn't look likely, just boring claggy weather >_<

Disagree. Look to Southland/South Otago and Marlborough for the action.

Tomorrow night looks interesting. Onshore winds and Southerly change later Christmas night posts a risk of thunder/ hail up eastern south island.

Some good surface moisture there. Heating not an issue at this time of year for a night time storm if conditions over ride

Otago higher risk, but later in the evening tony for Canterbury, more around midnight.

1am sounding, shifty winds at the surface, quite strong at 500mb so there is forcing there, and good moisture at surface. Definitely one to watch, ill be chasing at midnight if it happens.

Yes. A few "Hitz on the Blitz" (excuse the pun) with that system
Gone all claggy down here with a light East to SE, and a few drizzle showers.
Hopefully, I will get my gift from Santa tomorrow :D

The chance of storms last night nearly eventuated in early hours. I stayed up until 2am waiting incase and there were CBs that blew up and heavy showers over the plains just not quite enough ommph to get it going fully.

Areas today would be inland north Canterbury/ nelson would be best spots to be. Although enough heating this afternoon could trigger storms inland mid Canterbury

Wasn't overly interesting in and around Springs Junction, thought of heading north as I could see there was more action up Nelson way, decided not to, did get one photo looking north towards Nelson
