Bit of snow on the remarkables from today.
First summer holiday in queenstown and sure didn't feel like it today.

Are you sure it's snow, not hail? Looking in the water course areas I can see white lower down making me wonder if it might be hail rather than snow. I'd be interested in others thoughts (I also figure in the type of weather & time of year snow would have been unlikely).

Snow for sure.
It can snow down south on the high ranges and mountains any month of the year an not unusual in summer!

I have seen snow much lower and deeper on the Remarkables in January than is showing in the photos.

Daytime temps in Central Otago yesterday looked cold enough for snow on the higher mountains.

Another thunder day here today, with my wife reporting 2 claps of thunder she heard plus a shower which had about 6 bits of hail in it, when Richard and I went up the hill. Driving back from Orari to Geraldine we went through a heavy shower with large rain drops but here at home it was dry.
Today's maximum was 23.2C.

Fine this morning but it gradually clouded up to the west during the afternoon and then lower cloud moved in from the NE.
Today's (4th)maximum was 22,2C.
Looked good towards the Mt. Peel/4 Peaks area but I wasn't expecting much to happen.

500mb chart showing another vortex to influence the country later this week.

An outbreak of thunderstorms for Otago/Canterbury on Thursday.

North Island maybe affected Friday/Saturday?

Yea fingers crossed for decent rain this weekend.

Winter like pea soup fog here. Can’t see 100m and it’s 8am.

Do you think cloud seeding would have mitigated this rain?

They couldn’t have chosen a better time to get that Otago radar going. Yet again it’s getting another workout today.

Probably later on this month and into February when traditionally it does get hot down there and in other parts of the country.

No
Cloud seedling has been used in some parts of the world to increase rainfall not to decrease it, besides, never heard of it being carried out in this part of the world.

This is going be far from a normal summer so there's no way of knowing really.

Looking at Airport data Masterton got the high today with 29C, both Hamilton and Ardmore 28C.
Queenstown and Alexandra were unusually chilly with 13C.
