Wonky weather

Unread post by TonyT »

By way of an example of how, er, fluffed up the atmosphere is at present we have a monster depression forming in the North Pacific at a latitude similar to ours. All part of the current strong blocking due to La Nina and NH SSW I suspect.

Yes, lots going on. The Siberian high in the 1080's hPa, bomb cyclone and a major SSW underway for the NH as you mentioned. The infamous twin sister vortex is appearing in 5 days from now on most models. EC going for a complete polar vortex displacement towards the UK in 10 days. 60 to 70% of these events fully couple into the troposphere within 3 weeks and this has started already. One would assume this is a major cold wave brewing for parts of the NH towards the end of January.

GFS splits the northern hemispheric polar vortex in mid Jan. The cold wave in the troposphere is going to be epic if that verifies.
