I see that last night's Geraldine's hailstorm was on the TV One news this evening.
Thank goodness we didn't get hail like that here.

Here's a picture of Richard checking the rain radar on his phone with the supercell over the Timaru area in the background.

Another day where I’ve missed the rain we so badly need.

The wundermap shows some Waikato PWS got as little as 3mm, some >70mm!
7mm only for mine.

Some figures I’ve heard are 80mm Huntly west, 50mm Tuakau, 70mm waerenga, all today. Yet just a couple km from these locations they could have had as little as 5-10mm like me.

20mm in Grey Lynn yesterday and 20mm again today with thunder. Maybe another shower tomorrow but looks like a fine spell coming up.

Could be thunder on the extended outlook. _b

It was nice to chase near home today after yesterdays drive. Started the day with a storm over Auckland then drove down to the area of convergence Mercer to Rangriri, numerous thunderstorm cells formed there the afternoon, some nice lightning and plenty of water.

Another successful storm chase today. Didnt get any structure photos. Just the lightning shot in timaru which i was happy with.
There was a tornado/ funnel and more large hail reported with todays storm aswel

Todays set up was never going to make it north of ashburton at best with no moisture supporting anything other then the dry SW change, so im not sure why MS had the moderate risk extending right up over chch.Timaru south was the area today.

Great couple of days of unstable weather over the country! Summer is turning out to be a good season

Yes, there Mikey. Was a good 3 days to welcome in 2021.
Good too, with Richard and his storm photographer daughter to come down for a chase and accompany me to the spots 'up on the Downs', where I find to be good spots for weather viewing across the Canterbury Plains.

We have a ridge over the North Island today, no shortwave trough like we had yesterday.
So I expect convection to be significantly less today than what occurred yesterday and mostly over the ranges.

I’m hoping for better than that. I’ve got a light northerly to north easterly than will converge with the westerly sea breeze this arvo. Fingers crossed.

The ingredient that is there today is strong heating.

Sunny 25C here dp 17C, some T cu over the hills.

Last two days Waikato had a lot of cloud cover and rain cooled air.

Yup good heating today. Got to 26.8 and now about to get a shower. The convection has looked suppressed all day. I’ll take the couple mm I’m about to get tho.

Took a bunch of photos over the 3rd to 5th of Jan, around the Wairarapa and Bay of Plenty. Nothing exceptional but might as well share them.
