Phenomenal storms in Franz at present. Frequent close lightning, loud thunder, big hail and torrential downpours

Bit of an anti climax here, weak activity to the W-SW which died before arrival. Rain was very heavy but front was so narrow only 3mm fell.

Up to 24mm of rain in the last two days, the green summer. Talking with a local farmer who was born and breed in the area, he was saying he cant remember a summer where it hasn't dried off at some point

Re: Polar Outbreak Jan 17th-21st
Only 15.5C here just after midday after a shower had been through, trying to warm a little now. But no low max records will be set as was 19C just after midnight. Majority of people during brief lunchtime walk were in light summer clothes out of ingrained habit only. Have to check my records but pretty sure it's been at least since 2017 had a Jan day this cool.

Re: Polar Outbreak Jan 17th-21st
High teens in Chch today; not particularly cold, but unusual for a northwesterly flow in midsummer. Looked like sleet on timelapse webcam for St Arnaud this morning, with MetService obs showing only 2C. (at only about 600m asl)

According to MS, it was 14 for Hokitika and 13 for the others mentioned. They said Milford had the low of 10.

Re: Polar Outbreak Jan 17th-21st
The cool weather reaching Auckland today, generally 17-18C today, temperature did pop up a bit in any sunny spells, still cool tomorrow but looks like more sunshine tomorrow.

Greymouth living up to its name, torrential showers and a very cold wind off the sea. Hopeful for a clearance this arvo. Snow must be low on the hills
