Seen three bolts of lightning to the SW, but weakened as it passed over, another one after this.

Some very dark raggedy cloud to the west, and I may have just heard thunder.
19.7°C, falling; fresh SE breeze.
Edit to add: 2 definite peals of thunder since.

That just now was the most epic "rip-tear" of thunder I've heard in a long time: and here comes the rain.

Some nice thunder in Ashburton but it appears to be coming from a storm inland from town.

Just heaved it down with rain in town (Sydenham), I'm inside so not sure if any lightning but didn't hear thunder. Looks just inland for the latter, consistent with the moderate risk area.

Got out of work in time to get between Lincoln and rolleston on the way home. So hardly had to chase it!
Small risk today but didnt think much would happen.
Got these shots before it came over. Not a big storm but cool none the less!

Re: Polar Outbreak Jan 17th-21st
There was a few cells that were East on the plains outside that amended moderate risk, one storm between rakaia and dunsandal.
I could hear it rumbling away from work on the western side of the city.
I definitely thought there was a slight risk today, SW dying early to allow light winds but it was leaning towards being westerly not light NE.
Good to see none the less.

Re: Polar Outbreak Jan 17th-21st
Another strange day today, cool SW change blew through at 7am followed by a few showers then cleared up and the winds dying off, some sun and heating around lunch time must of been enough for the in coming cold upper trough this afternoon sparking up a few small thunderstorms which rolled over Rolleston area then into rangiora later on. January has proven to be a good month for storms this summer so far!

Drove from Catlins with dull cool drizzle weather
To sunshine and much warmer Balcutha. The change was dramatic...wind westerly enough to have in land shelterimg
