I'd possibly expect that sooner, the NE is being quickly overpowered

Jeff's station in Hoon Hay has gone up 4c in 40 mins. Sitting at 25.6c currently. The last few afternoons have seen peak christchurch temps between 2-5pm. A couple of very high cirrus clouds around now

The 24 hour record of 22.4C? That will have to be a super heated mass of air to keep the 24 hour temp tomorrow above 22.4C!!
Agreed, but I think overnight minimum records are more likely (if records are going to occur at all) than day time maximums. We shall see. We peaked at 31 here earlier and now back down a degree as a light breeze has arrived.

Edit - in fact we won't set a minimum record for today even if it stays above 30deg all night, as the 9am reset temp was 18 deg!

This is a super hot airmass and that record could well be broken

It’s like a furnace here it is so hot. My gardens have all wilted. I didn’t bother opening the curtains this morning.

Still only 28 degrees here in Christchurch. Wind is ENE so its got a bit to do to switch around. Thinking Christchurch will probably max out around 33 degrees.

Timaru aero hit 37.5C a moment ago but just dropped to 35.9. Amberley currently 34.7. Chch will warm up later, I was too optimistic about when the NE goes away until I saw Metservice's graphic, looks like late afternoon for the NW to win out.

Chch aero 30.6C with an easterly, it's going to be bloody hot when it turns around.

From MS on twitter just now:

"Ashburton airport has reached 37.5°C, the highest temperature at that site since records begun in 2006.

Timaru airport has broken its January maximum temperature since records begun in 1972 with 37.5°C."
