Ashburton Council's Jan record is 38.4C set in 1956 since records began there in 1928 (note that airport is also generally a little cooler the the town site).

Timaru Aero's 37.5C today easily beats its previous Jan record of 36.4C in 2015 since records began there in 1962.
NIWA's current Timaru township site's Jan record of 37.2C set in 1921 may also have possibly fallen today (records from 1910)?

Currently at our maximum for the day (so far) of 34.8 in Amberley, wind has been a light S-SE all day with the baro hardly moving.

Starting to wonder if the NW is going to make it to Christchurch. The easterly breeze is hanging in there, despite is being 32 degrees.

Just shows how warm this pool is. Look out round 4-5pm I reckon, its only the faintest of NE in Halswell so it must be close to shifting

And the baro starts to drop so the NW arrives, pushing the temp up 3 degrees to 38.0 and the RH down to 19%

Which weather station are you using Chris? If its the one on Beach road then the temp sensor is on the roof and reads high (literally and metaphorically). I've peaked at 38.0 now, and just dropping away a few tenths.

The usual New Brighton differential is applying. Its limped to 20.4 at the beach, while ChCh Aero is 32, and at home in Halswell is 35

Yes 35 in southern ChCh but only 31.5 at the airport. Difference is weird for an easterly. Still not budging.

We must be pushing that record today for some places.
No idea on record values but I had 9.6 here this morning and up to 38.2 this afternoon, so that's a 28.6 range.

See what you think about the Douglas Road station Tony, but it has maxed at 39.4C with 9% humidity (dew point 3.5C) after the turn to NNW. It's a furnace out there.

Chch airport still easterly, 32.5C

I peaked at 38.2, dropping away into the low 37s now as the NW is starting to increase. Sensor is at the regulation 1.5m above grass. I guess the differences are small in the overall scheme of things.

Cheviot's previous Jan record was 37.3C set in 2018 since records began there in 1983.
