Certainly very warm air with us Tuesday and Wednesday. I see Metservice have upped the forecast high on Tuesday for Christchurch from 33 to 35 degrees. Get the feeling somewhere isolated will see 37 or 38 degrees in Canterbury.

Not at all surprised, 850s touching 19-21C so I don’t see why 34-36C is not possible at this stage Chch-Amberley way with the sun out and the wind not too strong.

The 'upping' trend of the forecasted high continues from the Metservice, now forecasting a high of 36 degrees tomorrow in Christchurch. A very modest high of 29 expected today in comparison

Fire crews will be nervous with gusty NW forecast and the heat continuing into Wednesday.

Play safe Canterbury!

Stuff reporting that Metservice have mentioned the possibility of breaking the Chch January temperature record:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/weathe ... ew-zealand

"MetService meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree said nor’west foehn winds – warm, strong and often very dry, downslope winds – would affect many eastern areas throughout the North and South islands until late on Wednesday...She said the hottest recorded temperature in Christchurch during January was 35.9C and there was a chance that could be broken on Tuesday. The highest temperature on record for the city was 40C in February 1973."

The fire danger in the hills is very high, see the Evans Pass sign as an example. Lots of dried-out fuel around. That one will just be the airport which as you say is misleading.

Forecast highs of 36 and 34 today and tomorrow in town, 30 and 30 in the port which it has not reached in my time here. A day here in the high twenties is not a comfortable one, so that will be interesting! Stay cool and hydrated all, look after those pets as well.

Just cycled into work across town and there is not a cloud in the sky. Really feel like today could top the January record of 35.9c

Will be interesting to see what the temperature gets to today. Currently we have a decent sea breeze (stronger than initially modelled for this time of the morning) so I am wondering if it will take longer to turn northwest this afternoon and may limit the temperature somewhat. Would be wanting the temperature to be around 30 degrees at midday for 36 degrees to occur.

NW wind took a break overnight, so a calm start to the day here, what ever time the wind again returns will determine how hot it gets, always the warmest before so.

It wont take much when that NW does swing, we had a 5C swing yesterday in 20 minutes.
Today on the 850mb it's 20C and - 6c on the 500mb, very warm for NZ.

High cloud thickening from the South here, should limit how hot it gets today.

Thought I would start a new thread as today and tomorrow play out, possible records will fall in some areas for Jan if the MS forecasts verify.

The low temperature has started out and continues to be quite low fore Christchurch which may hamper any records being broken today. If there does end up being a record then it will be one hell of an effort!

The 24 hour record of 22.4C? That will have to be a super heated mass of air to keep the 24 hour temp tomorrow above 22.4C!!

33 degrees in Ashburton currently. Sitting on 22 degrees here in Christchurch with the sea breeze, although is it slowly fading out. Temperature might really shoot up around 1pm onwards.
