Re: General February Weather
a few showers around in the humid NE flow, 2mm here
a good sign...hopefully a change in the weather pattern (rain tomorrow at least)

Re: General February Weather
Tomorrow's front over the upper North Island has some instability with it so some heavy showers possible for many areas as the front crosses. Fingers crossed for a decent shower here but areas with good exposure to the northerly have the best chance.
Isolated thunderstorms/hail in east Otago tomorrow if the NE can get onshore.

Picked up an unexpected 16mm here this morning. It was particularly torrential just before 4am with the rain rate hitting 200 mm/hr

Re: General February Weather
Those showers this morning in the Auckland area from a weak warm front. Low topped shower cloud. GFS has it clearing away early afternoon.
And tomorrows front is bubbling away nicely with cb's in the Tasman on sat pic.

Re: General February Weather
The circulation from ex-TC Lucas is still swirling south of New Caledonia, I have admiration for ex-TCs that cling to life and refuse to give up their closed circulation. One last encore in the next 24 hours as he gets mixed in with the Tasman front. I only had 0.4mm overnight, the first rain drops for Feb but that is all about to change for the next 10 days.

Re: General February Weather
i wonder if the currently colder than normal sea temperatures north of NZ (due to persistant cloud cover) will help cool down and rain out more humid air masses moving down from the tropics?

Re: General February Weather
There is so much moisture in those tropical air masses that I can't see regional sea temperatures having too much impact. You would think the additional coolness would keep the warm front active if there is an effect.

Re: General February Weather
also the large area of warmer than normal sea temperatures way to the east of NZ seems to be a magnet for tropical lows to move to currently
i.e we are missing them as they move to the east of us
hopefully the idea of a sharpening easterly trough and then slow moving cut off low idea in the models for next week comes true

Re: General February Weather
Some heavy rain overnight in Lyttelton, now I'm in the central city with more steady but welcome rain settling in. Might delay the bike ride slightly...

Re: General February Weather
We have had very welcome, light. but steady rain since early morning here near Kaikohe and it's still raining and very humid. Kaikohe has just re-introduced water restrictions in town and the water table here on the farm was getting nearly as low as it was during last summer's record drought, so this will provide some relief. Hopefully there will be some more rain next week.

Very purply/red images from the Otago radar off the coast of the Peninsula at the moment. Looks quite thunderous.
