Looking a bit cold coming into the end of this month and July but how cold will it be to reflect on the temperatures for the rest of the year.?

Looks like July is going to just slip as ony a little bit colder than average (going by what's coming weather pattern wise for the next week)
and with a warming Indian Ocean off NW Australia and a possible La Nina developing
then a warmer and wetter than normal spring is on the cards?

Is that why we got 21 frosts here in Geraldine and the wood shed is nearly empty?

Yes it has been a very mild winter down here in Christchurch. Very few frosts throughout the winter here.

Re: Coldest year in decades 2021
Its interesting to see these contrasting points of view. For Amberley I would also say there seem to have more frosts, and heavier frosts, than we have seen for a number of years this winter. So it certainly *feels* like a colder winter, and that's what people are telling me. The other evening I drove from central Christchurch to Amberley around 9.30pm. In the central city it was 10 degrees with an easterly breeze. By the outer suburbs it was 8.5 deg. By the time I got a few km north of the city down to 4.5deg, and by the time I got to Amberley 2.5deg with a little frost on the ground. Amberley is about 50km north of the central city. Just a theory, but if the winter has seen a number of similar nights then that helps explain why city people call it a milder winter with fewer frosts, and the rural surrounds seem colder.

August is running running 0.6c warmer than normal (last 10 years data) for me here
and the last week looks mild
NZ as a whole is also above average too I see via Niwa data
which might mean we end up with the warmest winter on record

I reckon it has been the least stormy Winter ( also year to date) for northern NZ I can remember in my 25 years living this end of the country.

Re: Coldest year in decades 2021
my manuaka trees i planted are still wind burnt from the salt laden onshore winds we have been getting lately
so they will be looking forward to a break with offshore winds from this weekend
but yeah not very many good thunderstorms that is for sure...maybe that is reflection of warming...not enough cold uppers?
