Re: General March Weather
Looks like there is some tho. I think it got a extra lift/help from the local hills.NZstorm wrote:Forecast sounding from GFS for Tahuna, Waikato yesterday. Not enough shear there for a supercell but cb's can get organised for short periods and resemble a supercell.

Re: General March Weather
Getting some excellent rain in Laingholm, though it’s come with the inevitable power outage.

Re: General March Weather
The country's hot spot today looks to be Napier Airport on 30C and Timaru and Dunedin airports got to 28C.
An overcast dull day for Auckland and showery but the temperature still managing to get to 24C. Grey Lynn 14mm today.

Re: General March Weather
Tomorrow I think the daytime heating is the key. Isolated severe hail possible inland NI given the colder upper air there. 500mb chart for midday tomorrow.

Re: General March Weather
The mid level flow (700mb to 500mb) needs to be quite strong for a supercell as that tilts the storm.
Good point about the wind off the Firth of Thames getting orographic lift.

Re: General March Weather
Looking at today, low risk for canterbury to me.
High cloud cover today over much of south island. Afternoon convection and convergences may get some heavy showers develop this afternoon from timaru and north as far as chch if heating allows

Wind convergence firing up some heavy showers on the Canterbury plains, perhaps a little earlier than expected.

Re: General March Weather
The weather has remained cool and overcast in Auckland this morning. I see Whenuapai only 18C, probably getting outflow from that storm near Kaipara Harbour. Grey Lynn on 19C. Distant thunder heard here from that north Auckland storm.

Re: General March Weather
Sounds like near constant thunder off to my north, the Kaipara system must be quite active. Currently working so can't watch it :-/
