Re: General March Weather
Just started pouring in Wigram. How can the metservice website show no rainfall for the whole day? Incompetence?

Re: General March Weather
Very dark in Amberley, convection ahead of the main band means lots of rain about to fall or already falling. No thunder yet.
Update - thunder.

Re: General March Weather
Guidance showed thunderstorm potential up until 2 days ago, and I had "risk of possible afternoon thunderstorms" in the forecast at that time, but guidance backed away from the idea on Sunday. I did mention it as possibility on yesterday evening's stream.mikestormchaser wrote: ↑Tue 16/03/2021 14:12Models were incompetent until this morning. Re: General March Weather
I must of been missing a few guidance numbers Tony. I did see a SW change and rain for us today, a few days ago but as you said backed off Sunday.TonyT wrote: ↑Tue 16/03/2021 14:17Guidance showed thunderstorm potential up until 2 days ago, and I had "risk of possible afternoon thunderstorms" in the forecast at that time, but guidance backed away from the idea on Sunday. Re: General March Weather
Looks like you guys up there had a traditional thunderstorm that developed across the plains and moved over ChCh like the ones years ago when I used to live up there..
Nothing much happened down here except for a shower around mid-morning. Wind back to the NE here now.

Re: General March Weather
re bean rock....the windspeed is taken on top of the light house which is on top of bean rock and in a westerly there is good funneling through the harbour entrance.its gone SW now and eased but will slowly build again

Re: General March Weather
Quite often I have passed the Levels airport and it is raining there, on the way into Timaru and the MS website has shown no rain for Timaru.

Re: General March Weather
Wasnt a biggie john. A low risk that ended up putting out a few rumbles.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 16/03/2021 17:29 Looks like you guys up there had a traditional thunderstorm that developed across the plains and moved over ChCh like the ones years ago when I used to live up there..

I was expecting it to get to about lake ellesmere and spin off out towards BP, given the upper shear was rather strong westerly. But made it up to chch northwards before heading offshore.
It was also SW long before the main band came in.
Still hoping to get one more big day before may/ end of our storm season. Then concerntrate on any snow storms!

Re: General March Weather
Thanks, it did turn out to be real, was just where wind was being concentrated at that time. Was just a surprise to see as media was saying maybe not enough wind to race just before that time.Awhituobs wrote:re bean rock....the windspeed is taken on top of the light house which is on top of bean rock and in a westerly there is good funneling through the harbour entrance.its gone SW now and eased but will slowly build again

Re: General March Weather
I'll be be glad when this American cup thing is over for Auckland. Plugging the news. Not interested here in hearing about Auckland's harbours wind speeds and directions unless I was up there in a thunderstorm event.
anyway... an uneventful day here with cloud and a shower this morning delivering 1.1mm of rain. Clearing up this afternoon to become fine and sunny but with unpregnant Cu fluffy clouds forming, with a back to a NE this afternoon.
Today's maximum was 19.1C.

Re: General March Weather
Its quite likely ChCh Aero had no rain. It was very shortlived in the central city as well, about 3 minutes of rainNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 16/03/2021 18:20Quite often I have passed the Levels airport and it is raining there, on the way into Timaru and the MS website has shown no rain for Timaru.

Re: General March Weather
Seems to have gone into a dry pattern here. Nothing really to see next 10 days either.

Apparently according to this morning's Ashburton Guardian, a tree was struck by lightning north of the town and a nearby shed went up in smoke.darcyplumb wrote: ↑Tue 16/03/2021 11:38 Epic lightning lit up the sky about 5 minutes ago in Ashburton. Spectacular!

Re: General March Weather
Nice day here today until the southerly wind picked up from 2.30pm.
Lower cloud slowly moved in and the temperature cooled from then and into the evening. 21.9C max for today.
