General March Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looking possibly interesting in the first week of March with could be cooler weather and the likelihood of a TC developing off the coast of Queensland and drifting our way. :-k

Looking pretty set for a meeting between a Southern Ocean longwave trough and either an ex-TC or just warmer subtropical air. Hopefully enough rain for those that need it (all of us?) but not too much.

The first day of Autumn delivered a bit of hazy sunshine for us this afternoon with interesting development along the foothills but not doing much.
Warming up with it getting up to 25.7C.

10mm in Grey Lynn last night.

Some big convective parameters could be lining up for the Auckland area Thursday.

6mm here overnight which was topped up to almost 10mm by some heavier rain just after sunrise. Nice to have some rain after 12 days with zero.

A very nice storm this afternoon formed to my north. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it was a supercell for a short period. It displayed many characteristics of one.
Separated updraft from precipitation
Wall cloud like lowerings from the rain free base
Hail core
Possible land spout too
I would love to see some better radar images if someone from MetService is reading this. The strength of the storm caught me by surprise given today’s forecast.

Low cloud and a bit of light rain overnight but clearing away from late morning to become a fine and sunny and warm day, with a sort of humid feel for the day. Northerly winds. NWArch cloud this afternoon but that faded away this evening.
Today's maximum was 29.4C.

Forecast sounding from GFS for Tahuna, Waikato yesterday. Not enough shear there for a supercell but cb's can get organised for short periods and resemble a supercell.
