Re: General March Weather
Good Waikato chase spwill.
Big lifted index numbers with the forecast sounding for the Putaruru area showing -6C. We rarely see LI's that big in New Zealand but the shear was typical weak summer shear.

Re: General March Weather
Looking at low 30s possibly for Canterbury on Sunday with this weekend's norwester (GFS 850s up to 17C) depending on wind speed and cloud cover. Bit chilly next week and looking like a deep subtropical low slides down east of NZ.

Re: General March Weather
I had a good chase yesterday, first one this year and in a long time. Started out late at 2pm in Napier and gunned it over the Napier-Taupo road then decided to go north towards Rotorua figuring some would develop there later but then decided to go west to get to the storms near Putaruru but became lost and uncoordinated in the Waikite Valley and wasted time. Then backtracked and went north to Rotorua and got there at about 5:30pm and then more action started. There was heavy rain plenty of lightning and a big cg that hit somewhere in Koutu or Western Heights and at that point I should have gone north to try to stay ahead of it as it wasn't slow moving anymore. I tried to catch up to it and saw some big black clouds as it went out to sea at Papamoa Beach then saw an awesome lightning display as moved further away.

Re: General March Weather
UKmet has 500mb temps over Waikato -15 to -16C on Monday. That would be cold enough for a thunder risk. But its a long shot prediction atm, upper trough may not make it to the Waikato, likely to be more over Gisborne.

Re: General March Weather
Looked as though there was heavy rain out to the east around the Pegasus Bay area according to the rain-radar?

Re: General March Weather
I may be wrong but the Canterbury radar seems inaccurate since the Otago radar has come on board.Big difference between coastal and more inland temps today...we had a run at Sumner... left at temps of 19 degrees arrived Ashburton to 28 degrees an hour or so laterNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 14/03/2021 18:21 Looked as though there was heavy rain out to the east around the Pegasus Bay area according to the rain-radar?

Re: General March Weather
Another lovely blue dome day here until someone mucked it up and lit a burn off to the NW of the town this afternoon and spoilt the blue sky with smoke that put a yellow appurtenance to the day, this afternoon over the town. The smoke just lifted and spread out and didn't move anywhere because of the lack of wind. Anyway, a fine and warm day with today's maximum being 26.9C.
Next Week looks awful, with settled weather coming up from intense anticyclonic weather, through to the week after. Probably lots of fine/clagg days coming up with the possibility of no weather events occurring?
Maybe someone can jostle up the upper atmosphere

Re: General March Weather
27.6C the maximum here for today, recorded this afternoon when the NW Arch moved over and the skies cleared for a while with a NW freshening as well. The temperature was in the high teens until the Arch moved over and slowly went away to the NE.
Clouding up again this evening and cooling down as a light SE developed.
