Re: General March Weather
Nice photo there Brian.
Thanks goodness this troublesome anticyclone is moving away to the east to deliver us some nice weather, instead of clagg and all that rain that fell in NSW. Nice warm day today with some scattered high cloud and reasonable temperatures. 24.9C here today. Not much wind here but NW winds inland.

Yes, next week looking interesting with slow moving unstable moisture feed onto the country. Heavy rain /thunderstorms probable upper South Island to Northland.

Re: General March Weather
Finally looking like some action weather, March has actually been very much like January or February more settled but pleasant.
We really need rain though, even though parts of the region have had bouts of rain the water tables are at record lows. Which in return is seeing waterways really low and stagnant.
There looks to be some rain mid week for Canterbury hopefully it holds true, and again a strong front for Easter weekend on Saturday might bring snow about the tops and maybe a thunder set up.
I have noticed with METVUW recently the surface maps have an issue with zig zaggy isobars.

Squeeze zone alright, going to a be a change from the pattern we had previously.
Foretasted Dynamics are very active. Will be keeping a very close eye on the models over the next 2-3 days.

Re: General March Weather
we currently have some rain here already...from a weak convergence zone running down the coast
this is very promising for the week ahead
i.e means the high is loosing its grip

Re: General March Weather
A shortwave trough crossing Otago today with an afternoon storm or two there. Summer style set up to finish March.
Maybe a tornado report or two from the upper North Island from the upcoming system given convergence boundaries with lots of moist air.

RE zig zag isobars
The GFS model was updated on 22 March to V16.
I download the Grib data and process it in GRADS. Since the update my plots have a similar zig zag plot to the ECMWf
Not sure what changes have been made, will investigate further

Re: General March Weather
The Unified models (UK, Access G and Sth Korea's GDAPs) are continuing to produce a converging water bomb into the Upper NI in the next 72 hours. Access G tonight on the 00z run producing an east to north easterly attack on Auckland Tuesday evening.

Re: General March Weather
I wonder if the rain bands moving onto the far north now will make it all the way south to here overnight:)

Re: General March Weather
Apart from high cloud moving cross from the west it was a mainly fine day, especially this afternoon.
Light winds but a southerly did pick up from around 4pm.
23.4C for today.

Re: General March Weather
6mm here overnight. Lightning activity should increase later Tuesday over the north. Lightning could be frequent given some shear and good instability!

Re: General March Weather
When was the last time mid-Canterbury had a moderate chance of heavy rain? MS have one out for Weds-Thurs, though on the rainfall charts the rain looks to be further north. Risk of severe SW gales on Thursday maybe.

Re: General March Weather
There seem to have been a lot of "jam tomorrow" forecasts, where the rain never quite eventuates. When was the last time mid-Canterbury had a moderate chance of heavy rain?
This morning's early fog cleared around sunrise; currently sunny and 24°C, slight breeze.

Observing a big pyrocumulus cloud to the south at the moment, it's even appearing on the rain-radar.

Good Friday is like a Lockdown, has been for years, no shops open, except for garden centres so hopefully something of interest may happen to liven up the day?
