Darwin last min flights wont be cheap!
Yeah, therein lies the problem. Also, with Darwin in 2010 I took more expensive flights which had me arriving early afternoon, the rest of us had arrived on the very early morning arriving on the normal red eye flights. Having to stay overnight in Auckland for the early flights is also an expensive drag. Last trip I played Tiger flights against the Jetstar price garantee (Thanks Willo) These options might still be available, not sure now post COVID-19/SARS2. However I did learn in Nov 19 that those rapid rips without sleep aren't a good idea, I'm too old for that. Fell asleep at the wheel in the last 5 km near home (after about 30 hours without sleep, yay for those lumps they put in the road makings). It's doable running the gauntlet & gambling the time period will be ok. Not so sure if it is at the 11th hour cause the forecast implies it will be ok. Given warning I can make it happen, at the 11th hour it's much much harder to get leave approved.

Some very cold upper level air over the southern plains today. -19C at 500mb in a severe set up over Oklahoma looks unusual today. Tennis Ball hail likely with air that cold in a USA-style setup.

At least 5 tornadoes today, one on the ground being live streamed right now.

Look for feeds around Vernon TX

And Reeds video is up. I saw 6 today whilst armchair chasing. Had 4 different feeds going at one point.

Apparently he did do in another windscreen today.

So Daniel is in Kansas in preparation for tomorrow. Storms yes, tornadoes less likely, probabaly a linear/MCS kind of setup.

Reed got yet another new windscreen again today...

Hank added a video from Friday (Sat here)...

So Colorado delivered tornadoes yesterday

Needless to say Reed destroyed his day old windscreen in Texas

Should be some Texas/Oklahoma action today.

Just saw those videos above. sounds like a bunch of tornado wankers, I'm sorry. The last 2 were very annoying had to turn the sound off.
Nice to see a tornado and the related skies where tornadoes there develop from but much rather have lightning and thunder storms. more interesting.
Nothing like the sound of thunder.
Having second thoughts of going to the USA to chase tornadoes, now, I'm sorry. :(

Norman OK was bashed by huge hail yesterday, baseball + was the reported size. The real deal went down in Hondo TX with 5+ Inch hail, photo by Tim Marshall.

I'm sorry you had to turn down the volume John, rest assured they are not representative of typical chasers you would encounter. Reed particularly is an extreme example.

Apparently the first hurricane of the new season has begun somewhere in the Atlantic and may affect the United States of North America around the Miami area. Might be of concern especially with the tragic tower collapse.

Just putting this out there - based on current modelling for Saturday and Sunday Death Valley may well not only break the world record hottest temperature (129.9F or 54.4C recorded last year at Furnace Creek) but it also will break the magical 55C barrier. Both GFS and EC are consistently modelling 850hpa temps of 37C-38C for Death Valley for those days which at -80m asl for Furnace Creek weather station easily equates to 55C and Sunday especially could see 56C. Things can change over the next 5 days obviously but this could be one for the record books...

NWS now forecasting 55C maximum for Death Valley on Sunday which would be a world record if it eventuates...

Looks like Death Valley may have just broken it’s own world record with a 130F recorded in the last hour…

One of the things I've been doing is occasionally doing an airfare search for the following years US Chase season. I base it on arriving in Detroit a couple of days before Dayton Hamvention and returning about 3 weeks later. I'm pleased to report, for the first time in over a year I'm seeing return flights available under NZ$2k from AKL. Curiously enough, $1985 on QANTAS's own site. $2025 on Mix and match and a massive jump to $4846 on Wotif for the same flights.

I'm aware of someone stating MIQ would be closing down in June 2022. I'm trying to find out how factual that is and on what date if it is official (hard to beleive though). I'm hoping a US Chasecation will be possible next year, but aren't holding my breath.

Positive thoughts people, hopefully some light is just starting to appear over the horizon.

Meteorologist Tony Labauch posted these photo's on Facebook. He did point out the temperature wasn't official.

The official maximums for the Furnace Creek site from NOAA were:

Friday 9th July 130.0°F (54.4°C)

Saturday 10th July 129.4°F (54.1°C)

Sunday 11th July 127.9°F (53.3°F)

Monday 12th July 126.6°F (52.6°C)

I think there was more medium and high cloud than expected after Friday and this restricted the maximum temperature - the forecast had been for Sunday to be the hottest.

At Stovepipe Wells (which is about 50km to the NW of Furnace Creek), the other NOAA site reached 128.6°F (53.7°C) on Sunday.

No light sadly. The Govt as far as I have see is forging ahead with the elimination strategy. So unless we carry on with MIQ, travel is basically only for a few. I do think this should change if you are vaccinated but will see. I have written off next year already, picked up a few new hobbies in the last year, happy to sink money into them for the time being :D
