Re: General April Weather
I took chase up Tram Road to get into the first initial storm, cut across to Cust where the fire crew and main power were looking for a power outage due to lightning strike.
Then headed east to Rangiora where I sat and got a few good photos with the lightning app I'm using, which is amazing.
I didn't encounter any hail just really heavy rain.
Soon after I headed behind the back of the airport to catch the next line coming in, seen some good CGs at one point there was 3 pulsating inland.
The upper jet and combining local wind convergences really kept the storms going this evening, even once the heating had disappeared.
Infact there is still active cells out there now as of 10:30pm.
Simular set up tomorrow same strong dynamics etc except more coastal, the ridge opens up in the evening allowing coastal winds in.
Possibly a severe cell or two

Re: General April Weather
There is another risk today for the same area of south island as yesterday but not as good as yesterday.
The winds were variable last night with a NE convergence with the change and the moisture DP was high, so got the storms fiering.
Im not so sure the dynamics are as favourable this evening given the lack of moisture with the change but funny things happen. Ill give it a low risk!

Re: General April Weather
A cell just went up on the change around Rakaia, which I can see looking south, but it really doesn't look on otherwise. Beautiful afternoon at the rugby.

Re: General April Weather
Went down to the Waihao Forks hotel near Waimate for the ANZAC thing this afternoon. Some large cloud down there with the occasional large drop but then a howling southerly came through and ruined the day with strong gusty winds blowing all the way back to Geraldine with clear skies and the occasional wispy cold air stratus moving through. Winds eased now though. No thunder risk with this sort of southerly change I'm sorry.
Wind died out this evening and becoming fine and clear. Today's max was just 16.4C. 7C at 10pm.

Re: General April Weather
Looks like cold season is underway over the South Island going by the temperarures.
I see the first week of May might be dominated by high pressure but not a cold start to May.

Re: General April Weather
Cold season is underway i think to but not before some vigorous SW changes that have been coming through setting up some thunderstorm set ups over weekend and another one hinting for friday this week if it holds up.

Re: General April Weather
Front looks well-organised and active but a long way south with ground to cover quickly from Dunedin to Chch. Southerly buster perhaps.

Re: General April Weather
Southerly came through around 7.30pm, nothing much really, just a few puffs of wind and that was it with some low cloud rolling in later, not like yesterday when the southerly was quite fresh and strong.
Fine sunny day here with various high cloud and a freshening NW from about midday.
Today's maximum was 16.6C.

Yes, although no where near as heavy as what the radar is showing. Only 0.2mm recorded so far.

Re: General April Weather
How do they work out a positive lightning strike, they are usually from the top of the anvil.
Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

Going from Chch to Akaroa this morning. Light hail and sleet going over Hilltop, where driver said temperature was only 3.5C (at about 450m asl) and some hail on ground. No snow seen on hills.

Re: General April Weather
I chatted with someone at Grahams beachHow do they work out a positive lightning strike, they are usually from the top of the anvil.
they said it was very loud thunder clap
which lines up with a positive cloud to ground
(ie they tend to be very poweful lightning strikes )
