General April Weather
Perhaps thundery showers to start April for parts of the North Island on Thursday. Rain for Canterbury.
Easter weather looking okay however there is a trough modelled to move up the country on Good Friday.

Re: General April Weather
Polar vortex flexing, westerlies should get involved at least in the first couple of weeks and maybe some cold SW/S interspersed. My stratospheric-based reckons as the early vortex has been nudged towards us due to a minor warming event. It pulls away later (current GFS modelling) but impacts of that affect May?

Re: General April Weather
Started the month with a massive thunderstorm here in the wee small hours. Large hail, 68mm of rain and a lot of loud thunder booming around the Port Hills for about 6 hours! I think it will clear by lunchtime

And it's really cold - never seen snow on the Port Hills so early in the year. Mind you, strange events tend to happen on this day.

Bob Crowder would be on the phone if this did happen
....anyway, not expecting much from the southerly change tomorrow. See what happens.

Re: General April Weather
This was around 5.30pm not subject to any April 1st AM antics
Sadly it didn't do a lot where I was (Fraser Cove) as it went over. Did hear reports of funnel clouds being reported in Papamoa earlier & Te Puna later from it. Some great CG's observed in the distance and loud thunder considering the distance (delay over 40 secs).

Re: General April Weather
A nice outflow structure there tgsnoopy.
The whole setup has been a flop for Auckland over a number days, not even a rumble heard, but 21mm recorded here this week. Seems to have greened up the lawn atleast!

Re: General April Weather
Yesterday was abit pitaful in the end just 2mm here, I think when you have such a strong upper jet but no strong winds to match it close to the surface it struggles to get that precipitation to the ground.
Even though the radar images suggest otherwise, it seems to end up being much lighter.
Is anyone else abit confused with the inconsistancy on a daily basis of the models lately? It seems to be flip flopping quite abit lately.
For example yesterdays runs in the morning showed a low for the south island towards the end of next week , then the evening runs showed nothing at all. But now we have the low potential again for the south island .

Re: General April Weather
Latest UK 0204 12z run producing an energetic warm core subtropical cyclone (low 970's hpa) pushing into the Tasman @ 168 hours (next Saturday). If it verifies, it would be a dangerous weather system if a mid latitude upper trough syncs it's presence into the Tasman around NZ.
