Rain & storms NI 29-31 March
Still thumping down here. Not had rain like this for years. Sitting under a convergence zone. 12mm yesterday. 40mm since midnight and no sign of letting up.
Lots of thunder this morning too.

Nice to see some who need the rain getting a good soaking. Nothing happening here, second day in a row... perhaps need to pin my hopes on tonight / early tomorrow

A decent zone of moisture is pluming in the mid level on the 11:50am water vapour image. The trough exploding above Northland is currently negatively tilted.

Some nearby PWS up to 80mm for day already , 100mm + must be on cards, which is not common at low elevation, inland.

Yea I’m nudging 60 now. I think my 24 hour record is only 80mm so we are on track to have the most we’ve had in 24 hours since the station went in in 2007.cbm wrote:Some nearby PWS up to 80mm for day already , 100mm + must be on cards, which is not common at low elevation, inland.

60 today plus the 12 yesterday. More tomorrow. Our soil is loving it but the peat was too dry and is hydrophobic/repelling the water. Dusty under the water ponds that float on it.

Multiple PWS in Cambridge town have gone over 100mm, highest 115mm and still raining. Some 24hr records will be set.

Just for the records, a zoomed in radar shot around Cambridge around the peak of that convergence line.

Re: Rain & storms NI 29-31 March
Yeah, it finally stopped a bit after that, looks like Taranaki getting it now, amazingly you wouldn't think there had been that sort of rain today, running around town tonight, hardly any puddles or water in the ditches. After 24+ months of below average rainfall the water table must've been right down.

Re: Rain & storms NI 29-31 March
the rain band to the north of northland is not making much progress south...
might instead be a new raind/ convergence that develops somewhere else

Re: Rain & storms NI 29-31 March
Tomorrow brings another thunder chance to Auckland with a 500mb vortex crossing. It looks promising tomorrow, particularly if we get the sun out.
Pity about the last couple of days, just 5mmm here although still the westerly change to go through midday.

Re: Rain & storms NI 29-31 March
I suspect a new convergence line could still develop in Auckland area this morning?

Re: Rain & storms NI- 29 Mar 1 Apr
The wind has finally moved to a north easterly locally. The one thing that weather models are still not good at is predicting the speed and movement of mid latitude cut off lows.

Re: Rain & storms NI- 29 Mar 1 Apr
you can see low level showers across the greater Auckland area on the rain radar in the NE flow
so hopefully they intensify as the front approaches from the west

Re: Rain & storms NI- 29 Mar 1 Apr
Missed out here on Waiheke; it's now been almost 3 weeks since I last recorded a daily rainfall of 1mm or more...
I see Hamilton Aero's 80mm yesterday (4am-3pm), while nowhere near a record, looks to be its highest 24 hour rainfall since April 18, 2015, when it recorded 103mm for that calendar day.
The highest ever 24 hr rainfall that I can find for Hamilton was probably during Ex-TC Dinah on Feb 2nd, 1967, when Ruakura recorded 159mm, or 148mm for the 24 hrs from 9am. Hamilton Aero also recorded 136mm for the 24 hrs from 9am that day.
