EC projecting a text book polar streamer that produces a fractured polar Jet that interacts with the subtropical jet next Friday. Countless troughs and fronts attacking southward on the wrap around as a cold core cyclone deepens from a previous warm core subtropical low. Tornados will be on the menu if it verifies.

A strong SE wind gradient over the upper North Island next few days. The 850mb wind strengths indicate good lee wind gust potential for Bay of Plenty and Waikato early week.

Re: General May Weather
last night some of the models showed gale SE winds over even the Auckland area
but that has backed off a bit now
next weekend looks interesting...models are flip lopping...currently showing a major tasman low

Drove back yesterday from Wellington to Auckland via the Desert Road and observed a large halo around the sun. Couldn't fit it in the photo. Time was about 1400h.

Temperatures closer to average or below average for NZ next couple of weeks.
The ski fields will be keeping an eye on the low system currently modelled for next weekend.

Re: General May Weather
The upcoming polar trough is producing high volatility between model runs across all models at the end of this week. UK's 00Z run pushes the subtropical low south west towards the SI's east coast on the ridge, which then gets a polar injection, turning it into a beastly mid latitude cyclonic cut off low that heads westward towards Canterbury.

Can hear the ocean roaring 10km away from Waihi Township, the last time i can recall hearing it this far would have been 15 - 20 years ago, there are reports people can hear it as far as Waikino.

Already down to just 1 degree in Ashburton this evening. Should be a decent frost in the morning.
