May can produce some good thunderstorms for Auckland, GFS showing mainly clear skies next 5 days, looks like the high in control next week.

Jet stream pattern modeled for next week with a subtropical jet over Australia and a polar jet in the Australia Bight. A ridge over NZ.
Probably lots of thunderstorms in the mid Tasman next week.
GFS 300mb chart later next week.

Re: General May Weather
A blue dome day eventuated after the clearance of yesterday's cold front that moved north.
Low cloud around this morning for the duck shooters around sunrise but that cleared away.
A bit cool with not much wind resulting it only getting up to 13.2C in bright sunshine.

Re: General May Weather
First morning of the year here that I'd say is proper cold (for our climate), down to 5.3C for my station.

Re: General May Weather
Stunning day here in Christchurch. Sitting on 18 with no wind to speak of, feels much warmer than that. Looks like 5 or 6 days in the next 10 will hit 20 or warmer. Amazing for this time of year!

Re: General May Weather
I was only expecting it to drop to about 5C last night but it was -1C with a light frost, which brings us our third frost for the year and all in one week.
Its funny to think that over the past few years we've struggled to reach more than one frost by this time or even early June, that's how warm its been.
On a high pressure day in May going from -1c to 19C is quite spectacular, although we did have a leeward breezy SW instead of our pesky NE.
Over the next week or so temperatures will continue on the warmer trend for eastern areas, with the fohn NW so around 22 to 25C possible in some spots.
GFS hinting at a brief polar flick the following week.

Re: General May Weather
Another blue dome day.
Some interesting wispy cirrus uncinus moving across around noon and this afternoon.
Today's maximum was 18.2C.
I see the Tasman Sea is quite active, this evening with quite a few lightning strikes this evening on the back of the anticyclone.

Re: General May Weather
Warm day here for May after a light frost early this morning, when the sun came out behind the NW Arch as it moved away to the east this afternoon. 20.7C maximum.
Not much wind although a bit of a NW did flutter around 4pm.

Re: General May Weather
Solid spell of spring-like norwesters coming up on the GFS, not so much rainfall for eastern SI areas. At least the hydro lakes should get something in a few days' time. Possibly something wet for the North Island in a couple of weeks' time.
Warm and stunning in Kaikoura today, just had a steam train roll through town.

Re: General May Weather
A major cold shot is brewing. If this Long wave trough lines up over the warmish Tasman, a very interesting period in the last 10 days of May is on the cards.

Re: General May Weather
Significant cold has been in the 6 week data for somewhere around the 21st-25th May period for a while now. Snow for the SI, frost to follow.Cyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Thu 06/05/2021 20:16 A major cold shot is brewing. May can be a month for extreme rainfall if the moisture gate opens up to the north.

Re: General May Weather
GFS bringing the cold and Alpine snow next week, also extreme west coast/Lewis Pass rainfall and possibly also on the Kaikoura coast. NZStorm it does look like an atmospheric river is opening up towards the west coast at least.

Re: General May Weather
The last few runs have shown this heavy rain event for Wednesday, Thursday next week with the latest showing abit more for the city.
But it is a SE flow so most of it will fall inland, however 50-60mm could be possible if it holds true and easily 100mm inland.
Will this be the trend for winter, if it is and it starts dragging up the vortex the two might mix at some stage.

Re: General May Weather
it does look like a new trend (with the way the ridge of high pressure digs in to create the S to SE flow)
it will not take much of a pattern change for eastern areas to get more traditional rain from behind a passing tasman front/low
