I’m out for dinner not far from home in Sydenham. It’s been so heavy for the last 3 hours. I’m struggling to remember persistent rain like this in Christchurch in my lifetime.

And yet 50km up the road in Amberley we have had virtually nothing for 3 hours, the boundary lying between the two locations. Mind you, we did get 75mm today prior to it stopping early afternoon.

Crazy rain the last 3 hours here alright. Roads shutting left, right and centre. Up to 80mm now for the event with 24mm in the last 3 hours.

We cracked the 200mm mark just before 4pm, for this event. Really flooded down here but it has seemed to off peaked here in our street.

State of Emergency now extended to include the whole of Canterbury. Meanwhile the moisture river keeps feeding into here with another 7mm in the last hour taking us to 87mm. Think its possible might crack the 100mm mark before midnight!

Latest water vapour image overlayed with 950 hPa winds and surface pressure readings. Vigorous flowing canal of mid level moisture is now moving in from south of the Chatham Islands. Air pressure on land obs suggests the next vortex in the parade is now just north of Pegasus Bay.

The mothership low in the Tasman is moving NE towards Auckland and will drag this moisture feed into Canterbury during the night. This is a classic set up for a high moisture fed convergence zone. Lets hope not.

Yes, what does this mean exactly CT? Anyone in particular in the firing line from that?

Convergence zones appearing on the radar like this one in the last hour is what to watch out for. When they start moving more in a SE to NW direction and stall, this spells trouble. The high intensity areas of these zones should move northward during the night.

Yes expected but then models suggest a SW influence and high moisture out put heading north and back into mid and north Canterbury overnight and into tomorrow.
It will start to clear off in otago and south Canterbury.
Definitely not over! Hopefully the rivers in ashburton can hold up with the next band moving in.

* Residents in the Waimakariri District, in the Swannanoa/Ohoka area have been asked to evacuate immediately as river stopbanks are at risk of failing.
* Residents living near Eyre River are most at risk.
* Civil Defence sent an emergency alert message to mobile phones in affected areas around 8.50pm.
wouldnt have been better to do the evacuation earlier, when it was daylight?
now they have to drive on flooded roads in the dark?

Drove to Spreydon and back tonight (for a reason) and just a few patches of surface flooding, with the Heathcote within its banks at both 7pm and 8:30pm. Hope that continues, though the rain did keep falling and occasionally heavily. Roads were quiet so obviously plenty of people staying put.

Dont agree at all. I see this picking up again early hours of morning onwards into tomorrow.. infact models suggest the event going late into Monday night esp north Canterbury. Not over at all.

I agree but I think it will be more showery rather than constant rain.

I think there will be another period of constant rain early hours until around lunch time tomorrow before easing to showers afternoon. Showers may continue monday night. North Canterbury gets a dollop tomorrow afternoon/ night.
Hope the flooding down your way is on the ease for you john.
Plenty to catch up on over another weather meeting at some point to 😀

Water gradually draining away as the rain is not constant as what it has been today.
Talking to a Fulton and Hogan guy today, who was inspecting the street for flooding on behalf of the TDC, said that flooding around here was mainly because houses here were built in the 1950's with soakpits for drainage and that's why it floods in a weather event like this.
Another picture.
