The viaduct at Tinwald is under water. Lovely photo of it on the Hoops on Air Facebook page.

The region dodged an extra bullet overnight with the forecast rain much lower than expected. Heavy rain line has now moved back in to the City. Should be an interesting few hours if it sticks around on top of what has fallen.

A few Latest Rainfall Information: (ECAN)
Mt Somers 540mm
Geraldine Forest 410mm
CHCH to Akaroa HW: 206mm
Akaroa 170mm
Hurunui 146mm
Christchurch Suburbs:
Christchurch Airport (Metservice) 97mm
Cashmere 97mm
Christchurch Gardens 92mm
Ilam 91mm
HoonHay 90mm
I have received locally 94mm from this event which has now officially doubled the YTD rainfall. In other words, I have received the same amount of rain from this system as the first 5 months of the year!

you guys must admit that these guys
https://www.facebook.com/canterburyweatherupdates
are working hard at bringing together lots of up to date news and information and warnings and updates and current info
some other weather news have been trying to come across as not being alarmist...to much so?
e.g
https://www.facebook.com/WeatherWatch.co.nz
has hardly any comments or shares
because they are being the opposite of alarmist?

I'm not sure what your point is?
Prefer not to follow either too much down here. Occasionally have a browse but Met Service and Civil Defence does just fine for me

reports the Ashburton Wastewater Treatment Plant has been flooded.
That's disasterous news for a town that size.

A meso squeeze zone developing. It doesn't look like moving anytime soon.

Roads starting to shut around this part of town again as this river of moisture continues to drive in. A tree down on HoonHay Road now too.

In other news, that rain band parked over Banks Peninsula, ChCh and into the interior is really making its presence felt. A further 15mm here in the past 2 hours and no sign its going to let up any time soon

I'm at work in Wigram and must say the last 3 hours have been some of the most consistently heavy rain in the city Ive seen out of this whole system. The wind has really picked up from the SW as well.

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
Top 5 numbers on the gauges at Ecan.govt..nz as at 10:am
Mt Somers 546mm
Geraldine Forest 415mm
Townshend 398mm
Blandswood 365mm
Boundary Creek 300mm
Of those I expect Townshend (back of Mt Oxford) to excalate the most today given the current moisture feed

Yes coming down hard out in rolleston to. Synlait milk factory has been shut today with concerns of selwyn river being to dangerous to cross so they made the call to close for today atleast. Ashburton escaping this next belt which was expected! Very lucky for them

Re: Large Rain Event Canterbury and high altitude snow. 29-31st May 2021
Raining steadily all morning with occasional strong gusts in Lyttelton, no issues visible from the house though. Seems steady enough for the drainage to keep working well.
Airport up around 108mm for the event- going off MS website observations, automated model has another 7mm to fall today but that seems low. Lyttelton site has been AWOL for a couple of weeks for observations so no idea.

Looks like Mt Somers may have topped out at 546mm:
https://www.ecan.govt.nz/data/rainfall- ... ils/316310
Its total for the last 12 months is 1339mm, so 40% of that fell this weekend.

31mm of rain this morning from 7am, now showing signs of an easing coming. Still likely to get a few more millimetres from this system before it completely says goodbye to us. Now 120mm here in total, paddocks around the corner from rock hard to in flood.
