The weather has bene dry and fine for the last five days with high pressure anchored to the NW of the UK. The best of the sunshine and the warmth has been in the north and west, and on Wednesday (25th August) the temperature reached 27.2°C at Tyndrum in the SW Highlands in Scotland. This looks likely to be the maximum temperature for the month of August and it is certainly unusual for a site in Scotland to record the highest temperature in one of the summer months.

The settled weather looks set to continue well into early September as the high pressure cell remains close to the UK and we could be looking at a two week dry spell for many areas. Temperatures will remain around average with a few chilly nights. Autumn is calling!

The Met Office has produced a preliminary summary of the UK summer (up to 25th of August for some reason) and it shows a warmer than average summer for all, with the best weather in the north and west. Indeed, the far south has been colder, wetter and duller than average.

The dry and mostly cloudy weather continued until the end of August with just about nothing happening. The high pressure has remained to our NW and intensified late in the month to produce a provisional record high pressure reading for the UK for the month of August - a reading of 1038.0mb at Stornoway Airport at 21hrs on the last day of the month.

Here in Tiverton it has been rather cloudy for much of the last week of the month with a persistent Sc sheet, although it did break up at times at the weekend to give us some sunshine - not that warm, though, as the NE flow persisted. No rain on the last 9 days of August which has been nice.

It will be interesting to see how the recent hurricane activity to our west over the Atlantic and the USA will affect the weather as we move into Autumn.

The final CET for August was 15.8°C which is just +0.1°C above average. The final EWR was 53mm which is just 69% of the monthly average. The last 9 days were bone dry.

Here in the SW of England, temperatures were a little below average for the month (by about 0.5°C) due to the cloudy weather generally keeping a lid on daytime temperatures and not allowing them to fall so much at night.

The highest temperature in the UK all month was just 27.2°C at Tyndrum (on the 25th) in the SW Highlands of Scotland. Nowadays, it is unusual for a UK summer month to not have at least one part of the UK get close to or above 30°C.

The Met Office have produced another summary of the Summer 2021 weather which states that it was the fourth warmest in N Ireland and the fifth warmest in Scotland - in the temperature series that has been extended back to 1884. The city of Glasgow is stated to have had its warmest summer in this 137 year record.

Looking at the maps, they certainly had the best of the weather compared to us in the south, but this is an unusual outcome for the season as a whole. Not easy to say why, but a generally weak jet stream might be the main reason.
