Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Love some local knowledge from the UK - Test starts Friday 18th and they up up to 6 days to crown a World test Cricket champion.
Unfortunately the news seems gloomy to dire on the weather front for all 6 days?
Hopefully theres enough muggy overcast dry spells for our much vaunted pace attack to wreak some havoc!

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Hello Razor. It is a pity the match did not start last Friday as the weather has been fine in the last week - and the Kiwi bowlers certainly found their line and length at Edgbaston to blow England away all too easily.
The weather is set to break later today (Weds 16th June) with thunderstorms spreading north from France this evening and overnight into Thursday. After that, there is quite a bit of uncertainty about other areas of rain and thunderstorms moving north on Friday and Saturday, although the axis looks more to the eastern half of SE England so Southampton may be on the edge of this. One thing for certain is that it will be much cooler than of late and I am sure NZ won't mind that and it might suit them more so than India.
The Ageas Bowl at Southampton is a relatively new ground for Test Matches and has hosted a few of them since 2011. The wicket usually suits seam and pace rather than spin, so NZ will like it, I think, especially if it is cloudy. This ground was opened in 2001 and replaced the old County Ground in Southampton which was located not far from The Dell, the old home of Southampton FC. I remember going to the County Ground after school in the seventies to watch Hampshire play and in those days their two openers were Gordon Greenidge and Barry Richards and their opening bowler was Andy Roberts.

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Thanks Simon, looking forward to this one with great interest needless to say. I see they have a 6th day in reserve if rain causes disruption. In the event of a draw both teams are declared champions.
We would prefer to do it the proper way, especially having given India a test series defeat when they came here last year. They will be reasonably confident, but as always much will come down to winning the small battles. Win the toss and bowl, ideally

The forecast is not good for tomorrow, Friday 18th June, with rain predicted for most of the day and some of it heavy. After that, Saturday through to Tuesday look to have showers and sunny intervals. They may well need the extra day.

I just took a peak at the UK rain radar. Build an ark.

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Indeed, Razor, Friday was a wet day over much of the SE half of the UK with 50mm+ rain in quite a few places - see UK weather thread for more details. Here in Tiverton in the SW, it was dry all day.
Today, Saturday 19th June is much drier and play is due to start in 15 minutes or so. Both Saturday and Sunday should be predominantly dry albeit rather cloudy and cool, but the threat of showers is still there. New Zealand have opted to bowl, so the conditions should give some help to their bowlers.

Play is underway on Sunday morning, but it is cloudy and cool - current temperature at 11am is just 16°C under a leaden (stratus) sky. It looks like it will be mostly cloudy all day, but the base should lift a bit to improve the light, but always the risk of a little rain or drizzle. Possibly a few breaks in the cloud later in the afternoon and a little sunshine.
Looking forward, Monday looks to be a washout, but better weather Tuesday + Wednesday.

Because of the weather, might as well call it a draw

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
New Zealand advanced their cause sufficiently last night with a brilliant performance that we can even afford losing another day. Establishing a solid first innings need may negate the need for a second innings for NZ. 3 days scheduled, 2 may well be enough to force a resultNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 20/06/2021 22:59 Because of the weather, might as well call it a draw
This is without doubt the greatest cricket team New Zealand has put on a park in their history.
On that, it appears tonight's play is under significant threat of washout.

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Not looking good for today, Monday 21st June. Current weather at Southampton Airport (10am) is moderate rain with a NE breeze and just 12°C. Looks like the rain has set in for most of the day, so could be a washout for Monday. Much better forecast for the following two days, so NZ will need to get a first innings lead to put pressure on India.

Terrible idea to have England host this match. Yet another cracker final looks to slip through our fingertips

Fingers crossed the kiwis can bat they way they did on Sunday. A 100 run plus lead would be immense pressure on India and the ball will be zinging around all over the place

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Approaching lunch on the final (sixth!) day and India are only 98 ahead with 5 wickets remaining. Can the Black Caps force a result?
Weather is set fair today with sunny intervals and a maximum in Southampton of 21°C, so this could go no to near 7pm local time if the extra half hour rule applies.

Re: Southampton weather World Test Cricket Final
Great result for the Black Caps and perhaps the dire weather assisted them more than India? This is certainly true for the bowlers as Jamieson and Southee seemed to enjoy the seam and swing provided by the conditions.
Its been dry today (Thurs 24th) in Southampton and rather humid.
