It's flipped a 4 tonne truck. Probably around 180 to 200km/hr gusting vortex.

Tragic.
A Ports of Auckland spokesman said its south Auckland freight hub was hit by what “appeared to be a tornado” shortly after 8.30am.

One person working on site has been killed and two people have been taken to hospital.

Not surprised by the tornadic reports from Auckland, condolences to those affected.
We had a massive rain shaft last night around midnight, rain rate was like nothing I've ever experienced before before stopping instantly... I was lying there just waiting for the 'jet engine' roar. I've only heard it once before, more than happy never to hear it again.

The tornado today was quite strong. Strong enough to suggest supercell driven. I wonder is MetService could share low tilt high res radar at the time. Would be interested to see if it had a hook and couplet

Sad to hear about the port worked killed today in the events of today up in Auckland.
Looks as though he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It was probably the way the containers were stacked which allowed the wind to funnel through.
I thought that maybe they were MT containers but apparently some of them were full which shows the winds strength.
No pictures of the actual funnel on the news so maybe it was a very strong downdraft???

Papatoetoe Tornado

As this was a significant event, I think the moderators should consider this as a special topic as a port worker was killed as a result of this event.

I'm reading online (Radio NZ) that a thunderstorm warning was issued by MS for Auckland yesterday morning. I can't remember seeing that warning, there is nothing on their twitter feed for https://twitter.com/MetServiceWARN . Does anyone recall a warning by MS or have the details of that warning?

I had a look at some of the damage yesterday afternoon, the damage path I looked at was around 100m wide.

This was shared on Facebook by Oklahoma’s KOCO5 meteorologist Michael Armstrong. Decent video.

100m is a really decent tornado for NZ!
