amazing footage
good you were able to work out damage width Simon
100m is a really decent tornado for NZ!
But very hit and miss damage within the damage zone, the more concentrated line of damage was more narrow.
The East Tamaki Tornado last year on the 27th of June was only about 5 km away from yesterdays event.
that South Auckland area..you will have the Bombay hills/ Hunua ranges enhancing the surface NE ahead...funnelling it...down from Cleveland..then you have a West or NW wind change being funnelled in from around the Waitakere ranges...i.e lots of surface wind shear...a meso scale computer simulation would be interesting
Some other nearby damaging tornadoes are Ramarama, September 2009 , Albany May 2011 and Avondale September 2011. Auckland is a very small land area so is very much a hot spot for tornadoes.
seems to be a lot more frequent since 2009 than what I remember prior...there was always the occasional small one (Otahuhu has been a spot in the past)
don't forget the Drury Flat one too ,2020
and Hobsonville 2012
warmer ocean temperatures, which we have been getting -> more energy (dew point) -> stronger and longer lasting tornadoes

Just had a look at the distance that this has traveled. From reports and pictures of damage in Omana Road Papatoetoe, to the Containers in Wiri, that's 3.5km. Would be interesting to see a track map of the damage.

There was the Devonport tornado Oct 2013 which was well covered on this forum.
have seen a tik tok video on the SW motorway
next to the shipping containers in land port
cars are stopped as the tornado passes in front of them
and you can see the shipping containers blowing in the air!

What was the scale of it do you think? Ef1? Has to be on the scale surely? And was the storm supercell or more landspout stuff? No large hail reports to go with it for supercell identity?

It will be supercell type process that produced the tornado, I would say the Cb was not high enough and perhaps too short lived to get the large hail process going.
Some more photos from Saturday afternoon, I looked at only a couple of streets that were affected.

Below are a couple of my estimated tornado track-maps based on damage reports, which range from Omana Rd in Papatoetoe to the north and Pallant St in Manurewa to the south. That's a distance of at least 6.3 km.

A survey would establish the full track, there may be light unreported damage both ends on the path. I think this is the largest NZ tornado to be caught on camera. In the above clip how wide is the damage path ?
