After a frost, a rather cloudy but mild day eventuated. From minus 3C, it climbed up to 14.8C today.
North to NW sky developing with light NE breezes here this afternoon.
Colder inside the house today than outside. had to light the fire to equalise temperatures. 8-o

good rain here overnight (35mm)
the rain bands did a bit of a split I see, with the city in between a bit
I noticed there must have been a small low or occluded front pass over the area too...a big up /down in the barometer, a sudden temperature drop and a wind change around the compass (and the wind dropped off)..same thing happened for Ricky too :)

8mm so far here. Wind squalling between NNE and ENE locally. My heaviest rainfall normally occurs when the wind squeezes from that direction off the gulf ahead of an occluded front.

weird how that rain band over northland has just dried up as it moved south
I guess the front has become too occluded

After next weekend the models point to an unstable looking westerly pattern.

Looks like a couple of weeks of relatively boring and decidedly un-winterlike weather for us in Canterbury

Polar vortex is going on holiday in the South Atlantic, keeping the cold air away. Maybe a return in the second week of August by the looks of the GFS today.

Had a brief 169mm/hr rainfall rate with that storm. Plenty of thunder. Here is a shot as it was gathering itself moving towards the gulf.

Got to 18.1C here today, on the high side for July. This morning's 7am ferry trip was the roughest I can remember since I stayed taking them a few years ago. Combined with that sudden thunderstorm this afternoon it was a rather exciting day :D
