General July Weather
Will July be a warm month like June, despite the Polar Blast we are experiencing this week.?
Hope the weather and Covid-19 will not play havoc in the middle of the month as we plan to attend the Winter Napier Art Deco Festival.

Re: July General Weather
Looking unusually warm for the East of the South in the next few weeks according to GFS.
Looking like the West coast bearing the brunt of an intense low that forms in the Tasman.
Bit far out,but might be worth keeping an eye on.

Re: July General Weather
The polar vortex is much closer to NZ this winter and looks to flex its muscle in our direction around the end of the first week of the month (GFS stratospheric and tropospheric modelling). What that specifically looks like remains to be seen but it doesn’t look very warm as far as I’ve seen it.

Re: General July Weather
Locally, June of 2010 and June 2011 had a prevailing ENE wind. These years were back to back moderate to strong La Nina's above the -1.0 threshold.
Fast forward -Locally June 2020 and June 2021 have also had a prevailing ENE wind. 2020 was a moderate -1.2 La Nina.....maybe 2021 is a back to back La Nina.
BoM 's access-S thinks so. Interesting to see how July pans out.

1038.2 hpa now
I talked to Ben from NIWA at the field days and he reckoned a chance of another La Nina

Just noticed my baro up to 1036, looks like it may get close to my 12-year record in the next few days (1038.1)

Re: General July Weather
Kind of surprising with such clear weather in July to not be getting a frost every morning like in years past. 2.8 here at the moment (still dropping though)

Re: General July Weather
barometer just keeps on going up
I see Ricky is about to set a new record, currently at 1038.5
another frost here in the valley, very white
that's the most frost for many years

Re: General July Weather
I have a way to got from current 136.6 to reach my record of 139hpa. Coldest morning so far here this morning. -1.2 right now. Not sure why we aren’t getting -3’s given how cold the air was before the high came in and how strong the high is. My record is -5.4 so -1.2 is a light frost for here.

Re: General July Weather
Draped frost-cloth around the lemon-tree last night in anticipation of the predicted -2°C this morning.
When I checked the thermometer at 6am it was +5°C
So much for that!

Re: General July Weather
your barometer should be a bit higher than here Jamie as you are closer to the high center?
barometer pressure is a tricky thing to get correct
mine seems to be ready a bit high compared to the air port (which is now on 1038hpa)

Re: General July Weather
Just very briefly equaled my record at is 1038.2 which was originally set on 28th June 2019. Going to be some good upcoming inland frosts in the days ahead once the scattered cloud disappears.

Re: General July Weather
Been thinking the same. My urban station was actually colder than yours and the airport for once this morning, must have had no wind as the temp dropped very steadily all night till after sunrise. But still only -1.5C which is nothing much given this setup should be perfect for as cold temperatures as expect in a normal winter.jamie wrote:I have a way to got from current 136.6 to reach my record of 139hpa. Likewise for us in Rakaia, prepared for the frost with the lemon and lime trees and woke up to 6 degrees with a light dew.
