Unusual to see a nighttime thunder risk (almost) over Chch in winter, but it's clearly a very active system with the strength of the NW yesterday and today. Wouldn't mind being woken in this manner tonight but not getting my hopes up too much!

MetService 3 day maps show some reasonably cold air just south of NZ around Friday, cold enough for sea level snow but next to no moisture

Today's MS forecast not very good for Canterbury. Where's the thunder and hail? Nothing on the radar.
Why was Canterbury linked other regions around the SI even in the updated forecast?

Some fairly hefty showers around Akl this morning. Only last a few minutes at a time though in typical fashion

Fair heaving down in Lyttelton now as it has a couple of times already this morning, but blue skies to the west. Feels a little like the start to the original lockdown, just more blue and less cold!

Ominous looking skies around 5pm. Got a bit wet 20 minutes after taking the pic. Tiny hail mixed in with the rain.

Multiple models showing the polar jet fracturing over the Tasman early to mid next week. Recipe for a rogue cut off upper low and a synoptic scale cyclonic Tasman gyre below. This type of weather system can become a water bomb when trapped by high pressure.

I'm running 0.2C below my stations August mean temp, but that will no doubt climb a bit during the latter part of the month.

We had a period of ground frost here around early July otherwise it has been frost free, soft garden plants undamaged this year.

For northern NZ it has been a Winter lacking the usual weather events, non stormy.

Stunning golden hour looking towards Mt Pleasant and also Mt Herbert from the port. Could be worse places to be locked down in.
