Because of the frost early this morning and the non clearance of cloud from developing NW Arch cloud, eventually covering the sky for much of the day, it was a rather cold day. Today's maximum was 13.2C later today. No wind.

Looks like a positive phase of the SAM coming up which favours less westerly pattern.
Edit, positive phase rather than negative

Its hit 20 degrees here at 1pm with very little to no wind. Stunning day. Likely to hit 20 next 2 days as well....not bad for August!

Pleasantly mild today, up to 21°C or so; currently 16.9°C.
At the moment, a line of interesting clouds to the north-west - each one like a curly feather.

Low level snow and thunderstorms are some of the possibilities for the coming weekend weather, have to see how models develop over next couple of days.

Pic of some altocumulus (or is it stratocumulus?) I took on my walk around 5pm yesterday.

Wonder if the L4 lockdown is hindering the met service? Last 6 days straight have had overnight lows of 1 to 3C forecast, but overnight lows have been 4.8, 5.8, 6.6, 3.7, 7.4 and 8.3 this morning. Feel a bit silly removing frostcloth in the morning when overnight low was above 8C :)

Re overnight lows
Apparantly the minimum temp forecast on metservice website and app are for the period miday on forecast day to midday on the following day
Makes no sense at all!

Noticed the same. Saw 7C forecast last night which didn't look right. Had a min of 11.3.

If checking forecast later in day, that makes sense to me, what is the low for the coming overnight/ next morning is what is of interest
Confusing if checking it before dawn however, is that the min about to occur, or is that for tomorrow morning? Assume they switch it over about midday.

Re overnight lows
Regardless of the time that the forecast is issued, the minimum forecast low is for midday on that day to midday the following day
In other words any days forecast low is going to occur around dawn on the following day.
I have often noticed that the first forecast for the day mention morning frosts, but the forecast low could be 10 deg or more.

Nice chilly temperatures coming on Sunday-Monday due to a brief nudge of the polar vortex towards NZ, a very wintry end to winter.

Fine day initially but from noon cloud increasing from the west with a few spits around 5pm.
Light NE for much of the day but at 9pm, the southerly roared through with some drizzle, easing later.
Today's maximum was 19.3C.

the big Question is, is August tracked warm enough for NZ to make it a record warm winter?

At this stage, it's still looking highly likely...
