Just stuck my head out the front door and there’s the odd bit of sleet in amongst the rain.

Snowing heavily in Methven, the really cold air that will allow it to snow down to sea level is still 2-3 hours away, unfortunately this heavy rain will be gone by then…

The top 300m or so of Mt Herbert and Mt Evans have a good white dusting with it snowing heavily up there. Green and rainy below that.

I trust Mrs Razor is safe somewhere?
Yes thanks Tony, they are well domiciled in Greymouth and ready to sit out whatever follows thanks to the Gin Distillery in Reefton
And true to form taking husbandly advice on board they left at 6am and have had only rain as far as Castle Hill but are now sat at the top of Porters Pass with the road just closing. Sigh. No doubt they'll get down, but.....

Still raining in Rakaia. Just checked my business cameras and nice to see it snowing in Methven and settling. (Although not nice knowing we might not get to our business tomorrow if we end up with large accumulations)

Fetch, current temp difference of 15c sea surface to 850 hPa temp converting into frictional convergence over land. Lovely ocean effect

CT where are you currently picking the LP in relation to models. It seems further south. Secondly, are you seeing this main band of moisture feeding into foothills. On very light precip within 10km of them which seems unusual.

Circulation is starting to develop at 850 hPa over the upper SI, surface low will develop further in the next few hours around Cook strait. Attaching the latest overlay of wind speed and direction at @950 hPa, with surface barometric observations and moisture in the mid levels gives a good picture. Atmospheric snow machine.
