I'm considering getting up early tomorrow and heading up to the Takaurunga site which is about 100m higher than the SH29 Kaimai Summit. I have a 5 minute job up there that needs doing. Hopefully it won't have snowed that much that I can't get up there ;-) If I'm really lucky there might be some photo ops. Last time I was up there and it was snowing the IR thermometer maxed out on it's minimum of -40°C reading when I pointed it upwards. This time I can use the thermal camera in my phone to get joint thermal/visual photo's.

Edit, in hindsight, my odds are better tomorrow evening, it's too early in the morning.

Well thats the first round completed, and the heaviest. Next round this evening and tonight likely to be a little colder but not as heavy. Third round tomorrow along the coast.

Showers on and off here, mainly sleety and light. Expecting more tonight hopefully when the temperature drops again.🤞

Round two just arrived here, in the form of a sudden sleety shower

Just come back from the Downs in Geraldine. Whiteout conditions with intense soft hail there giving the ground a white covering around 4pm.

No theres nothing to write home about so far no.
Even inland near Springfield it looks like they had between 5 and 10cm if that with no reports of anything more than that in other areas.
Tonight/ mon morning might be interesting i hope but so far not as big as we might of thought 🤔
I just get a feeling now looking at the latest run it just wont be quite cold enough and the moisture may well keep out to BP than we think.
Hopefully its reverse psychology to the universe out there and that im completely wrong

Yeah until it proves otherwise I will not be paying attention to snowfall amounts generated by GFS as they are simply wildly inaccurate, at least for snowfall totals EC continues to reign supreme lol

Not much happening here in Rakaia and from what I’ve seen on my work cameras at Methven there’s nothing much in the shopping area of the township there either. Looks like getting to work tomorrow won’t be a problem 🙄 (I was hoping for snow on the ground but see North Canterbury are certainly getting it more)

It can't decide if it wants to snow or sleet/rain here in Waddington - unless the temp drops I guess it'll all be washed away by morning.

Colder at sea-level in Kaikoura than Chch this afternoon -1-2C while we're around 3-4C. I've heard that SH1 is now closed by snow over the Hundalee Hills south of Kaikoura. (highest point only about 200m)

#nodeadlambs. My 2cents. EC got this system very very wrong and are lucky not too see a major snow storm missed. They had temps wrong. Moisture way wrong. The Lows Position about 1-200km wrong. GFS in my opinion has been the closest with just there timing being out by 2-3hours max. They got the moisture right. A lot of rain fell between 5am and 8am before the snow really began. That's 15-20mm that would have been snow if not for the cold air being a few hours behind. This is the extra snow that was forecast. There's still a chance for places above 200m on the plains to pick up 5-10cm through heavy chain showers and a small southerly frontal system.

The first part of the system is over. There's still a small front to come through as well as Chain Showers building over night and tomorrow retreating to coastal areas tomorrow late morning.

Thats my take anyway. Well done GFS. as crazy and bullish you were. you wernt far off.

The urban heat island. All future forecasts of sea level snow probably need to come with a disclaimer "but not in Christchurch". The city has priced itself out of the market with hot air!

No i agree the GFS has got this event closer than EC so far.
For me im generally just talking about the outcome which hasnt seen it as bad as thought which is actually a good thing because no one wants people suffering with power outages, and problems with stock etc.
In terms of temperatures of the atmosphere going into tonight and early monday, im just not convinced it will be cold enough for sea level snow on the coastal plains now. I really hope im wrong though.
