Yes, Ben, snow low down on Mt. Peel and the 4 Peaks. Photos later.

A cold day here with lots of grey skies and the occasional light rain/drizzle with a light south to easterly.
I couldn't understand why the forecasts were so persistent with thunderstorms and hail, when, with today's weather conditions, thunderstorm activity was obviously not possible?
Were there any thunderstorms around?
Skies were clear here this evening, now it is coming onto rain. It this was 1pm this afternoon, maybe it would be a different story ?
Today's maximum was just 8.6C. 2.4mm of precipitation for today.

Hi John, never looked thundery today, timing was off and there was a cap where the atmosphere was to stable. Hence the cloud cover early morning.

Canterbury thunderstorm season doesn't normally get firing until later in October

I agree. I do tend that MS and other forecasters do tend to over-forecast thunderstorms in their forecasts, with terms like 'thundery showers' and 'heavy falls'. when you only get a few spits or drizzle
Yes. I, traditionally have used the Canterbury Thunderstorm Season to be from 1201am Oct the first to 1159pm of 31st of March.
but there can be thunderstorm activity before and after these dates.

Today looks more thundery than yesterday as there are lots of fluffy but weak Cu's going up. Shame there is no 'oomph'

Some rain overnight but clearing away this morning but with lots of unstable Cu cloud around mostly weak humulus, however looking more 'thundery' as compared to yesterday's useless weather/forecasting? Cloud clearing away later this afternoon.
Today's maximum was 13C in sunny conditions this afternoon, with a cool NE.

There is Tasman Sea low pressure modelled for next week, would mean a warmer week next week.

I see the thunderstorm season kicks off over eastern Australia this week.

Looks like Dunedin just copped a decent storm, bit more vigourous that was forecast. MS have done a bit of "nowcasting" to cover it

Re the above, does look abit stormy down there. Nothing on the Blitz?
Might move north but doubt it, as it looked like a west to east flow.
Anyway, today was a pleasant day after a light air frost, with warm westerlies blowing bringing the max temperature up to 22.2C here.
Clouded this evening with a light SE.

that nice northerly rain events has meant Aucklands water storage is now at 85% (compared to average of 90%)
https://www.watercare.co.nz/Water-and-w ... RZEALw_wcB
plus other things like restrictions still on water use and more water being used from the Waikato have all helped
that is good news , I bet there are people sighing a sigh of relief
and with La Nina, the rest of spring /summer should in theory not see any major drought periods overall hopefully (there will always be dry periods)

Temps fairly close to normal overall for September 2021. It was also a mostly wet month, apart from Canterbury and North Taranaki/King Country, although generally fairly sunny overall, except for Northland and Stewart Island.

October looks to have warmer northerly quarter flows to start off with for the next 10 days at least
running out of time for it to be the 'coldest year in decades' that some people thought?
