Thanks Will for restoring the forum before this windy event.
Sad to loose the info of the previous wind event 2 days ago. :(
Anyway, wind starting to pick up here now when it was calm before with a slight southerly.?

Has been the odd gust here over the course of the day but certainly nothing to complain about yet. Lovely and mild here at the moment - 18 degrees. Another night of broken sleep is on the cards if the forecast holds.

Looks serious inland tonight from Metservice and NIWA numbers and wording, and also the evidence from the other day. Light winds in Lyttelton now after a calm day but picking up a bit.

Might just group in with this that there's a significant thunder risk with this front, high risk inland/mountains/Southland so likely some downpours, moderate for coastal Canterbury and Otago tomorrow evening.

Calm here now with clear skies and a cloud/rain band cloud along the Alps. Calm before the storm maybe?
Yes. I can remember TV One reporter who did a feature of the NZThS many years ago, Got me stand on the roof to look out for thunderstorms on a perfectly clear sunny blue dome day.

Impressive amount of lightning for sure!

A bit of satellite and lightning animation:
SI front and lightning.webm
Hokitika at 2am reporting NNE 50 km/h winds gusting to 78km/h with a thunderstorm ahead of the main front - very good low level helicity for sure and an environment conducive to tornadoes.
